For me there is no better combination but I enjoy a sweet rum with a cigar. Zacapa 23 or XO.

Zacapa 23 + Partagas =  You can thank me later...

If you can find it in the UK, try this: Goes great with cigars.   Also agree with El Prez on the Zacapa 23, but I am not a real fan of their XO.  El Dorado goes well too, but I like th

Most rums aren't very boozy. Unless you go with Bacardi 151. Guess you could always try scotch or bourbon if you need the higher abv. :)

Yeah, maybe Ive just been so used to the peatyness of Laphroaigs and Ardbegs that Ive expected the rum to hit a little harder.. But, Ill sip this mellow gem and chill! And those 151 days are long gone with my wild Army days, thank goodness!

As someone who enjoys bourbon, scotch, & Japanese whiskies, I find the majority of available rums at 80 proof lack the oomph that I prefer.

Which rums 86 proof or higher that are "not too sweet" would anyone recommend?

TIA!

What do you guys recommend as a good non-Cuban rum to start with? I'm usually a Glenmorangie kinda guy but I actually like the idea of drinking something with less punch with my cigar. I'd prefer something with a touch of sweetness

Inner Circle Black Dot. If I recall correctly, it is 151 proof (75.9% ABV).

Kirk & Sweeney 12, 18, or 23 yr Outstanding rum. Not overly sweet like so many that are like a pre-made cocktail drink (the kind the ladies like with little paper umbrellas)

Picked this today on the recommendation of the rum guy at my local shop. Will report back

I can report back this is fantastic. Just paired up with a little Hemingway maduro short story and it's a great combination

Anybody here try this one? Going to Aruba in July and hope to bring a bottle (or two) of rum along home with me.

And now for something completely different.

Clairin (Haitin rhum agricole). Unaged white rum made from sugar cane juice rather than molasses, and as far away from the Latin-style sugar bombs as is possible to get. Suggestive of artisanal mezcal.  Magic when paired with a lighter-bodied smoke.

That my friend is the oldest and rawest form of rum also called Cashaca in Brazil and Aguardiente in Spanish speaking countries.

Firewater?

My two preferred Cuban rums,
Cubay 10 and Santiago 11 ( pictured here is the 12 y.o. which is sweeter ).
In Cuba for everyday pairing with cigars I choose Santiago or Mulata Añejo,

Great recommendations but can be hard to find in some parts of the USA. I find the Mount Gay easy to find.  I like it plain on the rocks with my sticks.  Also like the Makers Mark with cigars -- also plain on the rocks.

I do like my spirits to be distillate-driven, and the non-industrial production tradition with hand cutting local cane and fermenting with wild yeasts etc appeals to me. I quite enjoy drinking this stuff neat. Is there a cure, doctor?

I'm no way a connoisseur of Rum. In fact when I went to Cuba for the first time last year (been twice since), this is the first Rum I ever drank straight up and brought some home. Amazing...
