Rum and Cigars

Recommended Posts

For years now I've enjoyed Cognac, Armagnac and Calvados with cigars but never rum. So....any recommendations/suggestions?

For me there is no better combination but I enjoy a sweet rum with a cigar. Zacapa 23 or XO.

Zacapa 23 + Partagas =  You can thank me later...

If you can find it in the UK, try this: Goes great with cigars.   Also agree with El Prez on the Zacapa 23, but I am not a real fan of their XO.  El Dorado goes well too, but I like th

Stay away from the super sweet stuff...(Zaya) Or at least I do. El D 15, Matusalem 15, Plantation 20, Diplo Reserva Exclusiva, Havana Club 7, even Bacardi 8yr are all decent with a cigar. Be sure to pick a cigar/rum combo that compliment each other.

Gosling's Old Rum for the win.

Dark, smooth, satisfying.  It's on the sweet side, but it's complex.  I'd liken it to a cognac.  Best enjoyed in a brandy snifter.

I must confess that a bottle of Zacapa is on the "to get" list. It reputation preceeds it....

Also agree with El Prez on the Zacapa 23, but I am not a real fan of their XO.  El Dorado goes well too, but I like the 21 year and it is bit pricey.

Zafra also makes a 30 year that will blow your doors off but it will also empty your wallet quickly in the process.

Every since I went to Nicaragua, my rum of choice is Flor de Caña; there are a few in the line: Centenario (12 yr or 18 yr)... the Gran Reserva (7 year) is good too and these are the only three that I have tried as I have not found a clear rum that I enjoy.

I don't know if this is the best, but it's flavor is almost exactly what my imagination tells me rum should taste like.

Something dry. Barbancourt 8 year is my fave, surpassing even their 15 year iteration. I normally drink water alongside, but on a recommendation from Rob, discovered that dry rums complement most blends quite well.

My favourite is Havana Club Seleccion de Maestros, caramel and honey notes and a slightly spicy finish. Cuban rum and cuban cigars-match made in heaven.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just finished a bottle of this. Not your everyday drinker but I don't drink alot of hard alcohol anyway. An unbelievably good rum to my mouth.
