Just a quick note about v-cutting torpedo's. I was given a Colibri v-cutter by a friend of mine who couldn't get on with v-cutting cigars. What I have found is that although I'm not moving from a standard cut for most cigars, I have found that the v-cut works really well with torpedo's or any other cigar with a similar cap. The Colibri has a deep cut and this allows you to increase the smoking area of the cigar while preserving both the shape and not risking cutting too deeply. I've tried it with the Xikar v-cutter and I found this less effective because it does not have the depth of cut of the Colibri. Just thought it might be of interest.

I agree the Corlibri v-cut is a DEEP cut, so I don't care for it on non torpedos, but yep for torps its great.

Interesting. I've always used a guillotine cutter for Pyramid's, cutting at a 45 degree angle. I find it works well to increase the surface area.

Yes - the Colibri cuts very deeply indeed.

How I go about it as well.

I've got the Colibri as well. Never thought to try it on a pyramid before. The 45 degree cut always works well on those.

I use the V-cut on anything 50 ring gauge, or thereabouts, and above. Thankfully I don't smoke anything bigger than that too often.  On the smaller ring gauges, I've gotten into habit of using a punch cut. That works really well on the skinnies.

Just got a Colibri V, excited to try it out on some torpedos now.

I'm normally a punch evangelist, but not so much on torpedos.

I tend to use a punch on skinnies too - works very well indeed. I don't smoke anything above 56 - 58 ring gauge and I mostly find the straight cut (via a Cuban Crafters Perfect Cut) works a treat. The Colibri v-cutter has worked well on all torpedo's I've used it on so far: P2, Dip 2, Monte 2, and BBF.

I use a V cut on everything and have found that the Xicar works perfect, even on torpedos. Does as little damage to the cap as possible, and always gives me a perfect draw unless the cigar is plugged.

Its a preference thing of course - but I honestly dont know why anyone would ever use anything else.

For years I've almost always used a V cut for torpedoes, by far my favorite way to cut one. Normally Punch or straight cut other shapes but when I've used a V cut on regular cigars I've always enjoyed it.

Definitely of interest, thank you kindly.

Certainly historically, the v cut was preferred.  When I browse the antiques markets and fairs and come across antique cutters (i.e. 19th century), they are almost always v-cutters.  Given that at the time, the vast majority of cigars were not parejos but figurados, this must have been the preferred method.

The Perfect Cutter is an excellent piece of kit. I've been using it almost exclusivly now for four years. I tend to use a punch on skinnies and I've just started using the Colibri V-cutter on figurados, but the Perfect Cutter is without doubt an excllent cutter. Well made and has never let me down once.
