smoking a HDM Des Dieux

Recommended Posts

Now i'm a big fan of these and the size. Fits nicely in the hand, the weight and the look of it. All this is great but when i went and fired up a 6 year old Des Dieux the other night, which should produce something special with that age, i was extremely disappointed in the flavors. it wasn't a question of draw and quality which were all on par with the best i've seen before. it was dull in flavor, strong wood and tobacco, no cloves, no cream, no vanilla...nothing good! had 4 or 5 from that box, with mixed results. they seem to have a stronger blend than older ones. should i be thinking of letting them age another 6 years before having another?  i just hope i don't have a bad batch!

anyone else experienced this with Des Dieux? my box code is from 2011.

cheers,

Steve

Funny, I have 2 2013 boxes, and though the cigars look gorgeous, the flavors aren't. I've smoked 3 and similar to your experience, a lot of body, but simple, basic and monotone. I hope it's a matter of development with age...

enjoyed a '14 this weekend, excellent flavors and aromas, construction was spot on.

these are a treat for me,I have one 3-4 times a year since they are dwindling..........

I think 6 years is long enough to wait, try drying one down a couple of days  next time..........:ok:

In my experience when they "turn" they "turn" quickly. Same with Por Larranaga.

Don't sweat it. Put them away for 12 months and try again. They will get there in their own time ;)

I actually had a very similar experience with a 2010 DD. The draw was extremely tight and the only flavor present was toasted tobacco and was almost harsh. I could only get through half of it before I pitched it. The draw was unbearable. I have a few from 2003 that I'm hoping will be full of vanilla as others describe. I'll chock it up to a dud and hope the others shine.

Have to pile on. I have HQ/PSP boxes from 2013 and 2014. Thus far  they have been poor. Construction and draw are OK. Burn a might wonky at times. But, the flavor has been very strong, harsh and bitter. That tells me they might have great legs. Am not worried yet. Am gonna take Rob's advice. Maybe they just need another five years!

I also have a half of box remaing of said cigar Hq's BUM ENE 14 / MER ABR 13 and

they don't seem to have hit the flavor mark yet.  I don't want to keep trying a

cigar every 6 months or I'll have none to smoke!

I had one, it was very strong wood flavor and I found it extremely harsh and unpleasant.  I suspect that they are perfect for some people and perhaps a more refined palate.

I couldn't bring myself to smoke a second knowing how sought after they are and how little I enjoyed the first.
