Does anyone know how much these run from the hotel?  I'm looking to pick up a gray and black one, but usually see prices of $250 and up. Is that reasonable?

Not that high at the Hotel. That's secondary market pricing.  IIRC, the largest one is 30/35CUC.  They go fast when they pop up. So good luck to you!  :D

Selling at ten times the cost is a lot of profit. Not worth it in my humble opinion. I could see spending maybe $150 US for the effort of bringing it back.

Here's the bottom of mine.  The gray one was very recently brought back.  I would pay upwards of 200 for the large ones and I know other people who would/do as well.  They're very nice I think.  More than just an ashtray for sure.

Depends. High demand and low supply, even in Cuba. IMO the hotel prices them stupidly low compared to how coveted they are. So the secondary market is reaping both their own profit and some of what the hotel's could be.

Having said that, the hotel probably pays 5$ for them.

As with cigars on the secondary market, and everything else, it's worth what someone will pay I guess. If you know you're not going to Cuba and everyone is charging $200? Then it's worth $200.

It's an age-old issue. "No sir, I will not pay your outrageous East India Company prices for what costs pennies where they come from! In fact, I am reliably informed that they grow on trees! If I myself charter a ship and a crew and round the Cape, I too may obtain them for pennies.  Good day, sir!"

What you really don't want is the producer waking up to the fact that it is missing out on the huge secondary market margin, and raising its prices.  The producers of Japanese whisky raised prices 25% or more at one go, and the secondary market prices just went up accordingly.  The end buyer loses.
