dragon Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 As many of you may already know, they recently came out with new versions of the Cigar Oasis, both the regular and the Plus model. The new models now feature a digital display, low water indicator, an RH readout, and can now also be powered by a battery pack which attaches to the bottom of the water tank as well as the A/C power cord (that's the part I liked). I already have 9 of the original models currently in use, but thought the new ones looked cool so I ordered 2 of the new XL Plus models the day they became available here in the US. As it turns out (after exchanging mine twice), the internal hygrometers on the new XL Plus units are badly miscalibrated up to 10-12% off, and the units will not work correctly unless you set the unit to compensate for the miscalibration. I called Cigar Oasis directly regarding this issue and they tell me they are well aware of this problem and it may involve nearly all of the initial 3000 units they received from the manufacturer in China, and the next shipment of corrected ones isn't due for 1-2 months, and they will exchange my miscalibrated units for the new ones when they arrive. They also tell me the battery packs are not yet available for the new XL Plus model because they found out that with the increased fan speed of the XL Plus the battery packs were going dead after about 1 1/2 - 2 weeks, but they should also be available sometime in the future. I also didn't initially realize that in order to use the optional battery pack on the XL Plus unit that you have to buy a new water cartridge that is much smaller to compensate for the battery pack which snaps onto the bottom. Well ****......not very impressive to say the least! And the bad part is all the retailers are now selling these new models with no mention of the probable miscalibration defect. If you decide to buy one, make sure you ask if it is one of the new corrected units. About the only good news is that the newly designed water tanks for the new XL Plus models that now come with the green foam will work on the old Cigar Oasis Plus units. The old Plus models had a water cartridges that you would simply fill with distilled water and it also used a wick, but there were problems with water splashing up from the tank and shorting out the electronics in the fan. So if you have an old model Cigar Oasis Plus I would recommend getting the new style refill cartridges for them. Here's a pic of the new XL Plus model:
jay8354 Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Thanks for the advise Dragon. I was interested in the new models myself. Think I will wait awhile now. Once again, Thanks. ;-)
guilow Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Thanks for the info! I have the Oasis Plus and I've been VERY happy with it. I will consider getting the new cartridge.
habanohal Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I have been useing the Cigar Oasis 2. WOuld you know if they would be do anything new to these?
gehrig24 Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 » I have been useing the Cigar Oasis 2. WOuld you know if they would be do » anything new to these? I would like info on this too as it is also what I am using. I like the idea of the digital hygrometer and low water indicator but not sure if it would be worth it with all the problems they are having right now.
DocRKS Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Thanks for the heads up on this unit...your post again illustrates the point that just because it is "new" - that doesn't make it good or even better than the existing model. Sometimes it just means the marketing department needs to boost sales....;-)
kab55 Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 Very interesting information, I've got a half dozen of the old Oasis Plus units and have never had a problem with any of them.
dragon Posted January 30, 2006 Author Posted January 30, 2006 As a follow-up to my original post......Cigar Oasis has now received the second shipment of the new XL Plus units and they sent me replacements. The replacement units appear to now be correctly calibrated (only 1-2% off) and they work fine :-) Again, if you purchase either the new Cigar Oasis XL or XL Plus units, make sure you are getting the new production ones (2nd shipment) and not the original released mis-calibrated ones.

Taino Posted January 31, 2006 Posted January 31, 2006 ...now I know! I've been conducting tests on my humidor, hygrometers, and almost every possible variable to find out... thanks mate
