nathankwok Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Does anyone know the brand of this cigar scissors? I know the photo is not clear but the shape of the scissors is quite unique. Hope someone can identify it LOL Many thanks!
Fugu Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 No idea - but even from the fairly crappy pic, one thing is sure - it's a cheapo. The grinding angle of the blade is way too steep (and too narrow), whole thing appears poorly executed (mass product). With a cutter or cigar scissors you'd want as shallow (=small) and wide a blade angle as possible. That's producing the cleanest and easiest cuts. In a blade with a steeply angled grind, such as in the picture, the cutting edge (in particular that side where the grind is facing the cigar) will be more strongly displaced in the cutting process due to its more wedge-like behaviour. Will be difficult to get a clean cut, in particular in cigars of larger girth. Fancy design () - but essentiually nonfunctional, I'd say. Should you consider buying that one - skip it! Should you own it already - ebay is the way to go.... (and sorry for voicing it so frankly...) Get a decent two-blade cutter instead (good qual to be had at a decent price, even some cheapos do the job) but - if it needs to be scissors - then there really is only one make to consider - Donatus (high qual. at demanding prices). 1

Thanks for your reply mate! Your cutting tools analysis sounds very professional. However, I think this is an expensive scissors. LOL I saw this scissors from a well-known and wealthy HK cigar collector's Instagram. I do agree that Donatus made very high quality cigar scissors in the past. I have purchased a pair of Donatus scissors and the quality is not good at all. =(

Unless you could provide some better pics, I'll stand by my judgement (apart from the blades, take a look at the alignment of parts, angles, chamfer of edges etc. - cheaply made). And should it indeed be expensive, then it's expensive crap .... 20 minutes ago, nathankwok said: I do agree that Donatus made very high quality cigar scissors in the past. Plus $30 shipping? PASS. The Japanese origin, and ridiculous price do mesh with it being in the possession of a wealthy Hong Kong based collector. For that money Ill go with 6 boxes of PLMCs instead. 4

That's a lot of money for a scissors. LOL It's sold out at the moment, so I will use the money to buy cigars instead. =P 1

But I have to admit - in those studio-pics it looks much better than in your first picture. The pic from cigar cutting, however, again is not convincing as to the finish. Anyway, the blades appear thin and the angle of the bevel grind seems much more shallow than from my first impression. So, may very well be 'working' fine. But the price appears ridiculous, made of Japanese white paper steel, hand-forged or what?.... 1
