You suck. I'm not going to like you. I despise you... double banded dollar gobbler.

And so yesterday ken and I reviewed another large gauge release.  We started the conversation by decrying it's ungainly feel, the unstoppable march of radiator hose releases... the stupid pricing...the lost classics.....the inhumanity of it all. Mind you Ken was in fine form...the review coming at the same time as the Redskins (offseason)  and Arsenal (annual) implosion

But while we shined our shoes (....for the sake of the exercise, assume Ken wore some) in order to lay in a thunderous withering boot at this vile manifestation of marketing madness......something went wrong.

You see...the cigar was good. The cigar was very very good.

Damn you Habanos....it was the Magnum 56 all over again!

15 minutes into the review and we forgot all about the size as the flavours were if not quite mesmerising, not far off.

large gauge cigars still don't figure in my personal rotation. When I open my "smoking through humidor" it is a beautiful sea of sub 50 magnificence. I chose not to look at the interlopers who have taken up residence. A few Mag 56 here, a few R&J Wides there....+ others :lookaround:.  I lie to myself wondering how they arrived there. Hypocrite!  You put them there because they deliver come cracking flavours! You just don't want to admit that you enjoy them!

I won't ever be a large gauge bloke but I will hand it to Habanos/Tabacuba.  Love them, hate them or be indifferent to them.....they are pumping out some absolute cracking 52+ gauge cigars. Credit where it is due.

how fat of a cigar are we talking here, Rob? 55+ ?

Thanks for the reminder to not write off cigars because of size. I usually won't even think of buying anything over 47 rg. Maybe I should broaden my horizons a bit...

I don't regret the box purchase of the magnum 56 and did like the flavors I got of it.

But it is a stupid stupid cigar.

I avoid this conundrum by not smoking the things at all!

Of all the new and shiny double banders, I will probably only have a go at the new LCDH (which have always been more reasonably priced that EL/RE) Hoyo Elegantes and/or the Punch 48 as they are reasonable sizes and I generally like the marcas.  Do you expect those soon @El Presidente?

I'm no fan of the large ring gauges, but the Mag 56 reeled me in like a giant tuna, fighting the whole way to the boat...creaking jaw be damned!

I am moving in the other direction. I started with NCs so a 55+ RG was the norm. My first box of CC's was the Open Eagle (someone had to buy them) because the size was familiar. I have since been going smaller and smaller. My favorite now is a robusto extra type (EE, Mag 50) but have really been getting into corona gordas and am getting ready to dive into the world of the PC next. All that being said I too love the Mag 56, and have a box inbound.

All the great tobacco from the discontinued classics had to go somewhere. Unfortunately that somewhere is physically uncomfortable and painfully overpriced. How many years of great crops will it take for the wrapper/filler imbalance to correct? I enjoy the flavors of the 56, but I will not be buying more.

I absolutely loved the few Magnum 56's I've smoked, and the Connossieur A proved to be magnificent as well.  They may be producing some great large ring gauge stuff, but you'd hope so when every new stick they release is a large ring gauge.

The ring gauge is definitely ridiculous.

I'm sure a lot of the new fat cigars taste amazing, it still doesn't mean I'm going to like them. +50rg cigars smoke completely different to sub 50rg, just like cigars with ring gauges in the mid 40's smoke completely different to cigars in the 30's. I simply don't enjoy smoking huge cigars.

While I personally prefer RGs in the 35-46 range, I'm of the opinion that if a cigar is good, I will smoke it. Unfortunately, the vast majority of 52+ RG cigars made do not deliver as well as the classic vitolas, IMO. So I avoid them and theorize that the trend of large RG cigars helps HSA dispose of surplus volado leaf. How can twice the tobacco produce half the flavors of a classic vitola? Large RGs used to be a mark of full flavor and complexity giving the blender much more room for creativity. Not recently.

Now, if they do utilize the large RGs to their full potential, I'm listening (and smoking). But I must say, 56+ RG is just plain uncomfortable for me to smoke.

Find many large rg cigars to start out great, but last half tends to be less interesting - where as the rg 42 builds up all the way. Might as well be that they wear out my senses
