Looks like the same ash from mine! I guess we are all smoking fakes, LOL. Folks that write these articles who know nothing about the subject matter they write of really should educate themselves. They really embarrass themselves and look real dumb.

Oh fair enough. I do remember that Rob had stated that his sales had the Montecristo No.4 and Montecristo No.2 at the top in 2015 and at the time Alex Groom listed the following as the top 3 for CCW inventories...

1. Ramón Allones Specially Selected
2. Bolívar Petit Coronas
3. Partagás Serie D No.4

I need to ask both these fine gentlemen if that's still the case in 2016 when I next see them in person (hopefully Alex can restore/salvage CCW and inventory data close to pre- December 2016 levels).

I think it may have come from the same CA article dated Jan 8, 2015 that the highsnobiety article is using as the source for the claim. I am very curious because as bad as CA is I would still be surprised they would make a claim like that when no one I know has seen any evidence supporting it and would end a 20 year long streak. Last numbers I saw had Monte way out ahead of Partagas and I just find it hard to believe that the Monte 4 has been overtaken by the D4.

if it came from C.A. it is just as accurate as they have always been..................:cowpoop:

Shame that a magazine purposed for informing and enhancing the Cigar experience is so seldom accurate.:foot:

But we all enjoy the articles about the $50,000.00 watches................:hand:

 I love these articles :D

My favourite still were the journalists tracking down fakes in Cuba and detailing a premium box of R&J no 2 Tubos.

I don't think they're wrong on this matter. According to the Havanoscope (a source 1000 times more credible than CA), sinnce 2012 the most sold habano worldwide is the Partagas D4, IN VALUE. But  in terms of VOLUME the Monte 4 remains the leader.

They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time, it works every time.

Habanos reportedly announced, during a press conference at the Habanos Festival 2016, that the best selling cigars were the D4 and Monte 2.

I remember reading an article, years ago, that tobacco ash from Vuelta Abajo, would be grey with white veins because of the balanced minerals in the soil; whilst tobacco from central Cuban fields would be predominantly white due to the high potassium content.

Interesting. Both the D4 and the Monte 2 are now outselling the Monte 4? Wow. I guess, but it seems a bit hard to believe. Also, Cohiba outselling Partagas? Hmmm...

At least one part of the article is spot on, the highest-selling markets...

"Habanos also said that its top five markets in 2015, in order, were Spain, France, China, Germany and Switzerland"

I found that hard to believe too but guess that it was more likely in dollar terms than quantity of sticks. For Cohiba, it has been the top earner every year but Monte Cristo sold more volume, previously, as I remember.

Yes, "always" been. By value for sure, and probably also by volume.

Some figures from 2006 for reference, taken from CCW ( :( )

"Sales and Revenue figures are generally a close-kept secret within Habanos SA.  In a surprising lapse, the following figures for 2006 were "published".

Reportedly just seven of the 27 current export brands account for 83 percent of all cigars sold and contribute 82 percent of all sales revenue.  These brands are:

Montecristo: 23% of all cigars sold; 29% of all revenue.
Romeo y Julieta: 15% of all cigars sold; 12% of all revenue.
Partagas: 12% of all cigars sold; 12% of all revenue.
Cohiba: 11% of all cigars sold; 20% of all revenue.
Jose L. Piedra: 11% of all cigars sold; 2% of all revenue.
Quintero: 5% of all cigars sold; 2% of all revenue.
Hoyo de Monterrey: 4% of all cigars sold; 5% of all revenue.

Figures for other well-known brands are:

H. Upmann: 2.4% of all cigars sold, 2.1% of all revenue.
Trinidad: 1.5% of all cigars sold, 2.5% of all revenue.

The Bolivar, Punch and Ramon Allones brands barely register, however this position may well have changed with the introduction of the Regional Edition Series, as these three brands alone have had in excess of 60 releases to date (2013)."

I could have written this article in a few sentences and that is not exactly something that I am known for.

I would start with this. If you are curious about Cuban cigars, and want to know as much about them as I do, smoke a few thousand of them over the course of 20 to 30 years.

An ancillary note: You guys may wonder why it bugs me when people write a bunch of myth and tripe about cigar storage. This article is a prime example!

As flawed as the Cuban cigar may be, there is nothing more flawed in this world than a mainstream journalist!

Well said Mr. Piggy, but don't get me started on mainstream journalist!

Appear to be the case as Cohiba had a much higher revenue share than Party and was barely behind in physical sales even in 2006. Safe to say it's probably overtaken Partagas in both categories by now.

And I know, Marevas are out of style, but still the sheer numbers of Monte sold just crush Partagas and something like 25% of all Montes are Monte 4 IIRC? I could believe that the Monte 2 brings in more revenue than the Monte 4 but as for sheer numbers, I don't know. I don't doubt the D4 is a monster seller but Partagas sales are so much lower than Monte to begin with...

There's an interview in he current cigar aficionados with one of the top execs from Imperial Tabacco that confirms D4 now the top seller overtaking Monte 4. Also due to the demand for larger ring gauges from US. It's a good insightful read overall.

Meant it more as a sarcastic note... ;)
