Exactly the point of my post, I don't think Cohiba lives up to the hype, some are good, but overall the brand isn't my favorite. I don't give a crap about prices, marketing, or cool factor. I don't think they really attempt to be the best through production techniques (I wish they did), but rather through marketing. The whole point of the post was to see if anyone actually believes Cohiba is so great and if so ...why?

I agree with you on the Pappy analogy!  I've done blind tastings against supposedly lesser bourbons covering the entire range from the 23 year down to the two versions of the 10 year and the general consensus was that the Pappy was "good" at the normal bottle prices but not worth anything more. Whenever I get bottles of Pappy I just sell them, at the current market rate they're not worth keeping.

Nailed it man! Cheers to a fellow Whiskey enthusiast that knows the difference between buying a scarce glass bottle with a cool sticker and the contents! :D

In my experience, when you take the time to discuss with people who say that "Cohiba is the best", you realize that these guys have a VERY limited experience of habanos, they generally know the PSD4,

Good post and must agree on the Punch, just pulled a Swiss Regional out from sleeping in this coffin yesterday and oh what a difference a short 6 months has made! The cream never stopped and ended the

I don't believe in Cuban 'brands.' When one cigar is built by one factory with proprietary blends and tobaccos not commingled with others of other 'brand names' perhaps I will change my mind. Cohiba u

Picked up 6 bottles of the 10 year, 5 of the 12 year at Costco (all they had) ..then the manager called me and said that he noticed I bought a lot of the Pappy Van Vinkle /Old Rip Van and asked if I wanted the one bottle of 20 year that they had before it reached the shelf. I asked how much..it was $100 so I said sure I'll be right over to grab it..I sold it for $1000 in about an hour.

BMW is the best car manufacturer. There is no way you can say which is the best car or the best cigar or the best whisky etc,  You decide.

Funny the tasting. I did a Vodka tasting some years ago. 20 bottles were unlabeled and the bottles were kept at the same temperature so as to try to keep everything equal. The number 2 out of 20 was Smirnoff. I also put on a blind tasting as a phychology experiment in college for cola products. You got to pick your favorite and compare it to the "new" cola product and tell me if you like yours, or the new one better. You could also choose that you liked them both. 50% chose their favorite. 18% chose both leaving 32% liking the "new" cola over their favorite. Of course, the "new" cola was the same as their favorite.

I like Cohiba as a brand and have smoked both old and new cigars from boxes going back 25 years. Currently I've been buying a lot more boxes of Cohiba's in anticipation of the U.S. embargo ending and everyone and their mother (in the U.S.) going after one brand.. aka Cohiba. Price aside I'm wondering what my fellow forum members think about Cohiba in general as being regarded as the "top" Cuban cigar marca. I personally like the Lanceros, Esplendidos and Genios quite a bit, but overall prefer Partagas as a brand.

Anticipation of the US embargo ending? Surely you must be reconsidering this thought after the results of November 8th.

Let's see: Republican POTUS  Republican Congress  Obama executive orders wiped out.  It's fair to say, the Embargo is alive and well and not going anywhere anytime soon. Bada-Bing   Bada-Boom.

we all agree beach cigars are crap, isn't it? Why the heck than most of you think Cohiba is just hype and marketing? There are the bad cigars ("beach") and all the rest pretty much the same, meaning "good"?

What about Padron than? Hype and marketing too? There are bad nicaraguans and pardon likes, meaning good?

I really think they have a secret in the Cohiba line. They are very different from the "main stream" cubans, which are very similar imho and there is, im sure, a lot of marketing.

This secret is maybe the famous third fermentation, but i think there is a special leaf that gives that sourish taste. Who knows...
