I hate to see weather damage ANYWHERE.  I too hope that all is good in Cuba and the US as Matthew heads north.

Agreed. I was in the Gulf area after Katrina. Complete devastation. It was unreal.

I'll say a prayer for the people and the crops.  I hate that this storm has my name for many reasons!

I'm wondering if the U.S. has been around to help out for humanitarian reasons since the Embargo. If not, we need to be humanitarian, culturally and politically appropriate

in our approach to helping out. In other words, we want them to want what we have to offer and embrace us, as we embrace them. It is a delicate balance because the Cuban government has been the spokesman for the populace for so long and can be a difficult obstacle to getting aid to those who really need it. I pray for a quick response by the International Community and smooth sailing in Cuba's recovery.

From a logistics standpoint, there's a pretty good place for the US to begin a humanitarian mission.  We already have a nice 8,000ft runway, lots of heavy ground equipment, heck there's even a gate that can be opened along a very long fence line where we could allow the Cubans to take whatever aid they wanted through the fence and distribute it as they see fit.  Only problem is it's Guantanamo Bay.  The politics, history and resentment associated with that piece of property make the idea of Cuba accepting aid in this manner almost impossible for me to imagine.

Quick edit to make clear my post has no intention of turning what is a truly horrific crisis into a political discussion.  Just a geographical/logistical observation combined with the historical realities of Gitmo.

So sorry to see that, with my late praying for Cuba and other countries hot by the hurricane
