Connoisseur Kim
Actually, I posted my cigar tools purchase list on Cigar Tools Questions post but still, I have some questions about wineador. First question is, do I have to add fans to AKDY AWC0005 8 Bottles Single Zone Wine Cooler, the small thermoelectric wineador (like most thermoelectric wineadors, it has built-in fan inside) (most of people add fans to large wineadors like Newair AW-280E for solving uneven upper/lower humidity issue whereas they do not do this to small wineadors)? I am considering adding fans to that AKDY if I have to (and prevent uneven upper/lower humidity issue). Second question is, how many digital hygrometers are needed? There are some people adding multiple hygrometers to large wineadors for checking upper/lower humidity but I am not sure whether it is necessary for small wineador or not. BarryNY
Hi. I have the 28 bottle newair 281. I have not added fans yet, but with 3 hydrometers working the range between the bottom and top could be +/- 5%RH. According to some of the very experienced people on this forum they state that NC do better stored at a higher RH% than CC. Therefore, until my winedor becomes 100% CC I'm planning on keeping my NC at the bottom at a current 69%RH and my CC in the middle/top at 65%RH. My temp is rock steady 64F. Back to your question, for a unit your size, honestly, I believe that no fans s/b needed and only 1 hydrometer s/b sufficient...also why bother taking up any valuable real estate with a fan.........
KnightsAnole
A hydrometer is for measuring the density of liquids. A hygrometer is for measuring the humidity of the atmosphere. In case there is some confusion. I think Barry is right though that fans and multiple hygrometers would be a little overkill in a wino that size.
garbandz
an 8 bottle cooler would not hold enough sticks for me to last 6 months......

Actually, Newair AW-280E was the first choice at the beginning since small wineador would not last long. However, I had found that large wineadors needed more care compared to small wineadors like that AKDY. This was the reason why I decided to go with small wineador instead of large wineador. Next question is, is putting crumpled newspapers to wineador enough for removing plastic smell (some people use baking soda too when crumpled newspaper is not good enough to remove plastic smell)? KnightsAnole
That's what I did in all of mine. Add a little water to some baking soda. Wash the inside with the mixture, let dry for 24+ hours with door closed. Rinse with fresh water. Repeat if necessary.
PigFish
Controlling a micro climate for cigars is about controlling the temperature and water content of open space. If you cannot control the open space, you cannot control the cigars. Building on a wine cooler platform is lesser absolute science as it is experience and understanding the interrelationships of space, water, temperature and the appliance. The smaller the space, the less time it takes to perform functions, the more critical the control of these functions become. Overshoot becomes lesser an incident and more a problem. Wide swings of conditions are almost inevitable. The truth is, the smaller the system, the more precise the system must be. With that real life experience behind me, and with the costs of real adequate function (as I see it) a largely 'fixed' cost, these systems are not worth pursuing. All my opinion only! Cheers! -Piggy
PigFish
...Ahhh yes, and for those reading more wine cooler questions, I have one for you. Please see: Regarding the development of the NewAir
kalibratecuba
My wineador was an experiment that failed, too much variation throughout. I got mold, where I had in any other humidor. I want to spend my hard earned money on smokes.Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
Connoisseur Kim
I am moved with Whynter CHC-122BD Elite Touch Control Stainless Cigar Cooler Humidor instead. Case closed.
Jimmy_jack
I have a 28 bottle compressor Wineador. I have three hygrometers. One at the top, one in the middle and one at the bottom. Maybe overkill but I like it. I do have three zones. The RH 65% at bottom and 60% at the top. so my CC are at the top...the lowest and the NC are at the bottom. Are 3 overkill? Maybe...but I like it. I had a fan for a while and recently took it out. I found that it wasn't necessary. That being said, the fan I had was a steady state...not programmable. You can see it in the photo. I think that when I open it daily it allows for air flow/exchange. That's good enough in my book. FWIW here is what I've come to accept. As long as you're in the range of RH that you want (in my case 60-65) you're fine. I find that it changes when I add boxes...and that has happened a lot lately. No matter what....its a lot better than my old setup of singles in a desk top. the hygrometers in this photo show higher numbers. I was playing around trying to dial it in. Now it's low and mid 60's.
