A co-worker of mine will be heading to Varadero tomorrow morning.  He advised me today as I haven't seen him due to being on holidays from work that he will be going.  He is planning on picking up some customs in Havana for the (football guys; myself included) but also asked if I would like anything (regular production) for me to split with my dad.

Any recommendations on what's smoking good right now or at least with 15-16 box dates.  Thank you.

Cheers all!

Some friends picked up a couple of boxes of RA Small Club Coronas for me from the Calle 63 LCDH in July. I would have to check but i think the box date on them is March 16. They are very, very good cigars. Prices matched the YUL list (Calle 63 store was overcharging at one point).

Only regular production I'd buy there are Cuba REs or something else rare or old.

Stick to the customs and buy 14-16 regular production from Rob, quite frankly.

Yup stick with customs. I too am going no and was planning on production cigars but the good FOH folks talked sense into me. Customs all the way for me.

Encourage him to steer clear of late '15 Monte 2s, just got some back and they look anemic and spotty... 2-3 years nursing bill to follow.

From the sounds of it, its going to be customs across the board which will be nice.  Look forward to it and of course dad will be very surprised and happy when i give it to him.

Customs are always my preference in Cuba.

Just remember to freeze everything brought back and you will be sweet.

In Varadero look for Sr. Alphonso find him at 63 calle or Plaza America pending on the day ,  his Customs rival any I have had from Havana.

I remember Alphonso when I went in April with my family.  Great guy and great cigars.  True gentleman.  He even was nice enough to take pictures with me and my family.

that's great advice from the prez...I have a box of siglo Is that I purchased at an LCDH in Varadaro (I won't name which one, because it could happen anywhere in Cuba). Yes...beetles...lost 3 of the 25. Froze the remainder and they are all perfectly fine. I consider myself lucky it was only 3!

Always great to bring back a variety of customs including from Alponso's if I'm in Varadero. I prefer to buy my regular boxes in Havana where I can open them up to inspect before buying.

Hey LLC please let us in on where they let you open boxes in Havana? That would be the way to go. I asked once at Habana Libre....the manager was very nice but said no.

When I went in April to LCDH at plaza and 63 they opened the boxes after me asking them to for inspection. They didn't give me any issues with that. Thankfully both were good

Over the years at a number of stores without issue. Lately I've bought most of my boxes at Partagas and they know me there so never an issue and they are always very accommodating.

Didn't have a problem inspecting boxes at the Libre, but that was four years ago.  :D  Luis was the manager then, and he and the whole crew were very nice and accommodating.
