There is an online shop that probaby has plenty of MUR 12's in the UK,  but  he won't do business with us in the U.S.!! I've haven't any yet from '14, '15, or '16 because I still have boxes of LAR '13's,  and ALL are garbage!! PSP, HQ doesn't matter!

I wouldn't say there are codes that matter except for El Laguito, but I think it's worth pursuing codes that show consistent quality. This spreadsheet organizes codes by frequency of appearance on the 24:24 through Jan 2016 and gives you an idea what the most reliable codes are over the years in terms of the criteria that Rob screens out for before putting the cigars up. You can certainly see general trends and certain codes popping up more frequently, i.e. being selected as HQ/PSP by Rob more often. Generally, the more frequently they appear at all, the more Rob found that are of adequate quality.

Very interesting spreadsheet.  Helpful for historic data and general reference.  Thanks for sharing!

Code chasing has likely become a mere hobby at best I think.  However my favorite codes over last few years have been RAE (March-August 15) and ARG (All Of 2014). Every cigar I've had from RAE Jun15 has been awesome (BBF, Monte 2, D4, and Siglo 2), and I had some ARG Jun14 Siglo 6 which were just incredible (maybe best box I've ever had) and ARG Dic14 Sir Winstons-amazing.  More recently TOS (Bushidos, Dip2s, La Fuerza and Mag 56) and ETP (Bolivar Royal Corona, Bolivar Petite Corona, and Partagas P2) have all been really nice!  Maybe this helps?

It's helpful to be aware of which factory codes are generally associated with high quality product.  I tend to put more stock in Rob's comments when contemplating a purchase and worry less about the specific factory code.  However, when Rob is consistently touting a particularly factory code across different lines and marcas I definitely take note.  TOS is one that I currently look for.  In addition to the above mentioned items from TOS, add Monte #2 and PLPC.  Recently, I've also received great stuff with the MEG and SOM codes.

Yes, definitely hard work but not mine!

Thanks to planetary for this one. I thought this had been seen by more than it had--definitely not taking credit for anything but passing it along.

Muchisimas gracias planetary!!!

I feel safe in saying that Rob had never sampled any cigars from a single one of the boxes he's sold to me. :) At most, he's seen the wrappers.

But I do buy from him simply because he does take greater care in inspecting his stock than any other vendor I use.

There a video around on the criteria, wrapper shade is a factor but not the main. Aroma of the cigars, oil content on the wrapper and construction are probably ahead of how good a cigar looks. Probably with RyJ and a few others does wrapper colour come into play at a big level.

Obviously it's a combination of all the above when you're picking cigars to buy. There's plenty of great looking cigars around that have poor construction or no rich aroma etc

This is very interesting.

I just picked up a box of Monte Edmundos, DIC 15, SOM.

I've smoked some killer cigars, and these are on another level altogether.

Can we say definitively that SOM is from the EL factory?

SOM is definitely not El Laguito, brother. For DIC 15 rolling into 2016, AMO is EL. AMO is still in use for EL. We'll know if that has changed when we start seeing more Cohibas. As an aside, Siglo VIs have started to pop up in drips so I'd assume Siglo production has resumed and we'll know better then.

I'm not sure what factory SOM corresponds to, but based on what Rob has put up, SOM has been producing goods cigars in late 15 going into early 16.

Sorry to have to differ with you, my fellow BOTL, but I have a box of Ramon Allones Phoenicio 35's and this is right on the box. "Further to this prestigious vitola selection of this release, is the fact that the regional edition cigar was hand-rolled in the famous El Laguito Factory." My box code is SOM DIC 15.

The fact that it's written doesn't mean it's true. Remember the BHK rolled at Partagas, bearing the El Laguito code…

I do understand but I have to believe it until I know otherwise. I have actually two boxes bought from completely different sources and they both have the same code.

In the last 12-24 months I've enjoyed MUO Cohiba, EML Diplomaticos, Por Larranaga and San Cristobal de La Habana and LUB H.Upmann.

Iirc, being rolled somewhere but boxed elsewhere gets stamped with the boxing factory, hence the partagas factory muo (maybe).

It wouldnt shock me to learn that some factories use multiple codes either. Guessing game most of the time, but does make for some entertainment i suppose.

I have been wondering lately if the codes change/rotate throughout the year?  It has been fairly well confirmed by many sources the main factories are fairly consistent codes.  Prior to August 2015 the main codes were MUO--El Laguito, ULA--Partagas, LUB--Upmann, and EML--La Corona.  The one I have been a bit unsure about is my favorite code from 2014\2015 of RAE--I want to think it is the old El Rey Del Mundo factory but this is certainly just a guess.

From August 2015 on it seems AMO is El Laguito, ETP is Partagas, MEG is H Upmann, TOS is La Corona, and I believe SOM is the new El Rey Del Mundo code.  This is based on similar codes and cigars I have seen produced with the RAE code.  However things like this argument about the Phoenicio being rolled at El Laguito and having the SOM code brings me back to the thought of the codes changing throughout the year.  It is certainly possible.  Keep in mind this is nothing more than educated speculation.  Nothing more.  Yet another reason I am happy to have our host picking out nice boxes for us--because chasing codes is kind of crazy to say the least.
