CaptainQuintero Posted September 3, 2016 Posted September 3, 2016 Looking up the date of these I can't believe they were a 2012 release! I put a few away on arrival to rest and next thing I know it's four years later :S I don't remember much fanfare about these on release, I don't think ERDM really has the guts to make something spectacular in a large ring gauge; nothing above 42rg from the marca has ever left much impression on me. Still, these should be good based on why they were made, you'd think more effort than usual would go into an anniversary cigar, wouldn't you? Starting off, this is a big cigar. I think it's fair to say the glory days of ERDM are well and truly gone now the long and skinny cigars have been purged. Those sizes just made the ERDM blend superb, the big fat sizes just mute it away so you only get glimpses. Talk about going in with preconceptions. The thing starts off very muted, bordering on harsh when pushed to get anything out of it. This kind of reflects my experience with larger gauge ERDM in general. I'm almost regretting this right away, this size cigar is a two hour journey, it's going to be a slog if it keeps going like this. Some signs of life! There is a syrupy sweetness in the tip of the tongue, nothing much else currently but it's enough to keep me persevering. That muted tobacco that floats dangerously close to harshness won't go away though. Half way in and something changes, the cigar has life! The sweetness is still on the tip of the tongue but now there is some body; sweet fresh bread and milky coffee starts wafting in. The rest of the cigar doesn't progress any further but to be honest I'm just happy there are some pleasant flavours coming out! Coffee, syrup and a sweet, doughy freshly cooked bread just mingle together and it's a very pleasant smoke. The thing feels like an attempt to copy the ERDM greats; the longos, grandes de espana, the lonsdales and Petit coronas. I think that's just it, it's like a dedication, like an old band reforming for a new album but there's only one original member left and he has Alzheimer's. It's a nice cigar, but i just can't get the idea out of my head that it's mimicking an idea, and the idea died a long time ago. This isn't the only one, the half dozen ERDM REs I've tried have been the same, the packaging is lovely though. 87/100 there's just no soul man 3

Thanks for the review...great job ! It's the first one I've had so hopefully it was just the runt of the litter!
