So, my pansy ass brother in law (not really, but you'll understand) is going to visit us this weekend.  He's a semi-experienced non Cuban cigar smoker.  He doesn't smoke many cigars now because he says they make him sick to his stomach.  Well, after questioning him, he feels that way after smoking non Cubans, and I suspect he is inhaling too much smoke and smoking too fast.

I want to turn the tide and show him it doesn't have to be that way.  I want to be careful in my offerings to him, so, which mild CC's would you recommend I offer up?

Have you got Hoyo de Monterrey, Quai D'Orsay, Rafael Gonzalez or El Rey del Mundo in your humidor? Or perhaps aged stock, but I would understand that offering an aged cigar may not be as appreciated as you'd like it to be.

Recent Vegueros Entretiempos - that'll put him off the cigars for good ;)

I have some HDM Epi2 from a 2005 cab that are smoking like almond butter, literally !

HDM De Luxe smokes very smooth as well for me...and it's only 2014 box.

Recently got a box of HUPCs in the other day. It was a great light smoke. Seems like it would fit the bill.

Hoyo Palmas Extra, newbies and lightweights I know have enjoyed.

Another friend who is a normal macanudo mild smoker enjoys a SLR Regios and the Serie A.

Give him anything and watch him smoke it.

Too fast, slow him down, inhaling, make him stop.

A few hours later, give him the strongest thing you've got,see if he learned anything............ :teacher:

Cigars making you sick is related to nicotine content not the strength of flavors.  Seems to me that even the stouter CC's are still using tobacco that's old enough to not let that happen?  At least that's been my experience.  I would think that, just for safety's sake, anything with 5 years on it would be golden.

The only time I got knocked on my can by nicotine was from a wee little Monte 4 of all things, so even the good stuff can have a green leaf slip through now and then! :cigar:

Qual D'Orsay was spicifially created for French tastes, and they prefer their cigars very mild.  Many people complain that Quai are too mild, but they are good for introductions.  But be mindful of the effects of vitamin N

+1 something in the HDM Epicure line, and also a choice not too young (say at least 18-24 months on the clock). Not overpowering in terms of strengh nor flavour, but excellent smokes in their own right.

I agree, Papa.  I'm sure his main problem is he's inhaling.  I'm going watch him smoke to make sure he doesn't do that nor smoke too fast.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.  I have a box of QdO Coronas Claro that have about three years age on them, and a box of SLR Regios.  I think I'll start him out with the QdO.

I'm not sure I've heard anyone describe recent HUPCs that way...I'm halfway through a LUB MAY 14 box and these are medium to medium-full all day long.

I'd have to throw out the HdM PE, Fonseca of course, and ERDM CS. I also think recent RyJ Chills are pretty mild as well. I actually think the QdO Coronas are approaching medium and the Imperiales are a bit milder.

I had some HUPC's from 06 earlier this year (thanks again for organising the split @JohnS) and even at 10 years they still packed a punch.

The QdO's should be a good start.

I'd offer him something with a larger RG: a robusto is harder to smoke hot than a corona, IMO.

As for marcas, I'd go with a SLR Regios.  It has spice but is quite mild.

There is no way around Hoyo. QdO is on the same strength level but not the same quality imo. Trini can be well above medium, same with slr, they are both just mild-medium on flavor.

That's just my experience. Smoked it ROTT and it was extremely mild. More mild than the PLMC I had the day before.

This is simply not true. Urban legend. The best selling habano in France is the Partagas D4, talk about a mild cigar…

Quai d'Orsay was created with the idea of a refined blend (and a specific type of wrapper), not specifically a "mild" blend.

I have already posted the story of the marca, and Guy as well… I'll try to find these older threads…

As for the OP's question: Fonseca N°1, Hoyo Palmas Extra, Quintro Favoritos, Sancho Panza belicoso, Choix Suprême…

I must respectfully disagree, at least in part.

Per http://www.habanos.com/en/marcas/quaidorsay/

"All Quai d’Orsay sizes are made with a light tasting blend of filler and binder leaves."

I agree that the French do not only like mild cigars. But enough Frenchmen enjoy a "light tasting" cigar for Habanos to create a mild marca for France.

"Refined" is a rather nebulous marketing term.
