I'm looking into picking up a box of double coronas, I've never owned a box. And have maybe smoked a few, actually only one I can remember. A 2001 punch DC that had zero flavor, cardboard is how I would describe it.

since it looks like things won't be getting better with wrapper leaf now is the time to get a box.

If you guys could give some recommendations on what is smoking good, and what isn't worth my money or time. I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm gonna guess you'll get recommendations for every DC produced within about the first 20 responses to help with your decision. :)

You will get recommendations for all because they're all very decent. The only DC which doesn't hit my palate is the VR Don Alejandro, the rest are all in my regular rotation and I love them all. A good DC is as good as it gets IMO

Since there are only 7 Prominentes currently in production it's easy to figure out which one you prefer. The SLR DC is the only one that's considered a white whale, although the Punch DC is is a bit short at the moment.

You're probably going to get recommended all of them here, but the Lusitania is very popular and seem to be smoking fairly well recently. I'm not a regular DC smoker, but I haven't been impressed with the RA Gigantes, VR Don Alejandro or the Hoyo DC as of late. Haven't heard much recently about the SC El Morro.

Partagas Lusitania have been better than Punch and Hoyo for my tastes.  Those are the only 3 I have had.  I have no doubt that the Punch and Hoyo will come around with a few more years on them.  I like my 14 Lusis better than my 09s at the moment.

Ramon Allones Gigantes by a mile. Love the complexity in these and they've got a little strength to leave you content.

Can I recommend looking into a box of churchills? I have always been more impressed with the offerings in that vitola (Cohiba, RyJ, Upmann) than the DCs.

Happy hunting! If you can do five packs or trades, you're best off trying them all!

The nice thing about Lusitanias is that you can get them in boxes of 10. They are all good, just buy the one that looks best / is cheapest next time they come up for sale.

I wish there were more DCs in 10 boxes. Actually, I wish there were more Piramides in 10 boxes, too. I'm in the same boat as OP.  I've never had a Cuban DC, so I think getting a sampler is my best bet. Not really the kind of money and time investment I can see myself throwing at a full box without being confident.

For me the Lusi and Gigantes of late have been quite good.

I wanted to explore the DCs so every time one came up on the 24:24 i bought a box and did a split.  Now I have 5-10 of each to try at my leasure.

I love the format and find that they arent the massive undertaking to smoke that I thought they would be.

I will cast the line vote for the VR DA. I like them,  more so than the others I've tried.

THe DC is one of my absolute favorite sizes, be it a Prominente or a Churchill. In terms of current production, my favorites are the Lusis, the Sir Winnies and the SLR DCs, followed by the RA Gigantes. It does come to down to your favorite flavour profile, though. Either buy a few singles of each to try, or start off with a 10ct box of Lusis - you'll most likely enjoy them a lot.

I smoke DC's and Churchies regulary.  I would rate the top three as Lusi, Punch and RAG.  Not that I don't smoke the others.  Just not as regularly.
