Newbie a bit overwhelmed... breakdown appreciated!

I think you are selling yourself short. How did you determine what NC's you liked? Probably by trying "hot cigars" in forums, magazines, ect. The same applies for CC's. Just dig in, try samplers like with NC's, and continue to read.
I would advise getting on YouTube and watching this websites channel on reviews. They do a good job and can shed some light on brands and profiles. Extremely entertaining watching them review cigars and argue about each one. Kenny typically is underwhelmed by 7/10 cigars and Prez busts his balls for it. Love it, it's great!

Welcome and enjoy!!!

If it helps, I am fairly new to CC's.  I was riding the wave of "strong equals complex"  as I feel a lot of NC's are doing these days.  I had some CC's every now and then the last couple of years.  Recently I purchased 20 singles from a reputable source and found what i loved about them.   At first it was hard to go from the strength of NC's to CCs.  But my palate has changed and then towards the last few sticks it hit me.  The smoothness of CC's was unreal.  It was the smooth, complex characters without the overbearing strength.  I was hooked.  I have now found myself choosing medium NC's that I feel mimic or have some CC aspects.  I have just ordered first box from 24:24 last weekend of Boli RC.  I am splitting with a friend and that is what I will start doing.  I enjoy Bolivars and also had some success with Ramon Allones SS.  Rob gave me a list of a few other after explaining what I liked and also explaining that I dont have the cash to jump all in and start a huge collection. The Prez mentioned Diplo 2s, Hoyo Prince and Monte Petite Edmundos.  I am eager to get some PCs and smaller sized in my humidor so I can get experience without breaking the bank. I am excited to have found FOH.  The information I read is phenomenal.  Keep it up everybody and thank you to all of you sharing your experiences and knowledge.

I LOVE the advice :) trying to catch up reading it all. Wife is convinced we need a furniture style cabinet humidor for our new home... score! She is also convinced that I need to fill said humidor as it would be odd to have a beautiful humidor empty....(score again) so yes to samplers and note taking- this is going to be a FUN hobby !!!!

Wow you are blessed.  I placed my first order for a box and then got scared to tell my wife! Ha. She was fine and knows how much I enjoy this.  But it is great to see yours helping you out with the hobby.  Thanks for posting and starting this topic.

This community is truly amazing! I'm so thankful to have all of you contribute such useful information - now I hope I can find a friend or two in the area from here to experience some cigars together!

As a noob this has been my favorite post. I've visited many forums for my other hobbies and I must say FOH has the most mature and friendly people of all of them. Perhaps it's because you guys (like me) like to light money on fire. Thanks fellas, really

. To say Cohiba is the gold standard is a difficult statement frankly. I would say a truer statement might be that Cohiba attempts to be the gold standard (and in many cases perhaps has dibs on the better leaf but not always). My most memorable cigars (as a ratio) haven't been Cohiba. One of my least memorable cigars was a Cohiba Esplenditos.

you've probably gathered as many different opinions as there are members, which is half the fun of this place.

agree samplers a great start.

like most, i've had some disappointing cohibas but they are worth trying and can be brilliant. a box of Coros selected by our great mate, Hamlet, remains one of my most treasured. not only can he roll, he can spot a good cigar. they were/are stellar.

also, i'd offer a contrasting view of esplendido, though i've seen disappointing ones. when good, sublime. another great friend from Havana gave me a box years ago and it was/is (though very few remain) as good as you could wish for. in fact, Rob still reckons it should have gone to him (some people are never happy).

good luck with the search.

^this. The Espy demands a particular TLC.

Folks keep misunderstanding me on this point. I never said Cohiba wasn't good or great, I've had many great ones, and love that honey grass profile (when I can get it). I was simply illustrating the point that they aren't *always* a 100 point cigar, a mythos that seems to drive the rabid masses.

No, I actually did get that and agree with you (and who'd actually say of any cigar it were always a 100-pointer anyway), and wouldn't even speak of a gold standard. I was adding to Ken's statement trying to express my opinion that the Espy is something 'special'. It's different, and it can be demanding, why it often seems to be polarising. Leaving price and purported nimbus (I couldn't care less) aside, it is different in its attitude, as let's say a Boli Gigante, another great in its own right (and a fave of mine).
