PaulPower Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 Any recommendations for a double corona that will take to age well? But don't just make a 2 word recommendation; tell me about your experience with this cigar and what benefits it get gets from time in the humidor, please. Thanks!
Smallclub Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 All DCs age well, they benefit everything generally provided by a well made aging: smoothness, roundness, long aftertaste, complexity, evolution… and caramel of course 1

For example, I love HDM DC fairly fresh, honestly. To me, it's a cigar that benefits from a separation of its component parts rather than the inevitable blurring of those parts that comes with age. Essentially a mild cigar, it gives off jets of distinct elements-cedar lashings in particular- here and there when young that are a thrill in large part due to their clarity since there is not so much power overwhelming things. Some stews absolutely taste better the second day. Not this one IMHO. I simply don't know about Lusi, as my own are still fairly fresh, but early returns are not encouraging with respect to whether aging will add to things. Punch DC may be another matter. There's a certain richness to this profile that may result in benefits from aging, esp in cab. 1

I am curious about this. Luci( Partagas Lusitanias) is high on my list, because some people I respect have raved about it. I have a new infant and am starting my collection, so I must be judicious in my selections. Anyone have Luci aging experience?
garbandz Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 find buy and smoke a 5 to 8 year old double corona, it will be apparent why they are better with age. mere words are not enough, you need to experience it firsthand. 3

I' smoking a 2004 Lusi at the moment, waiting for GoT S6E10 on TV… at my age, tss tss… A good aged Lusi is one the best habano experience, but again this also true for the RAG, SLR, Punch and Hoyo. Never had an aged VR DA, but I can't see why it wouldn't make a great cigar… 1
Optic101 Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 As Smallclub already mentioned. They ALL age well. The other and more important question is, do you like a more fresh or more aged cigars (medium or well aged ... )? I am a fan of more aged tobacco, but certainly enjoy many jung examples. The journey and development of a box is a wonderful experience. Your own experience will provide you with the best answer. 1
RijkdeGooier Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 I do enjoy aged DC's as well. All DC's age well However, the caveat is always that yesterdays tobacco need not be today's or tomorrow's tobbacco. Here's a picture for your entertainment of three Hoyo DC's from the 90's we smoked this weekend. PS: Frank, yes VR DA's can be wonderful too. When I shared a VR DA 03 with the importer all he sad was 'trés bon' while nodding and smoking? 2
potpest Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 All the current DC's in my eyes are the best cigars Cuba makes. They will all age well, they will all benefit from age. If you're looking to age just one then you should pick the flavour profile which you love. I personally love aged RAGs, SLR DCs and Punch DCs the most but not one more than the other. Not to say hoyos, Lusis and Don Alejandro's don't age well because they do. Buy 5 of each, lay them all down and smoke them all when you feel they are old enough. Then you will know which one ages well for you.
MrGTO Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 Good topic. I love the DC format. I have some Punch DCs in my locker but they have a long way to go. I'll crack the box for my 50th bday! Only 13 more years to go!

My roster isn't very deep... It wasn't that long ago (4 weeks) I was planing a trip to Canada to to buy some CC. Thank god I realized the folly in that! I wouldn't have the foggiest where to find aged CC. 1
PapaDisco Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 I've been enjoying the Punch DC young ('12) so much that I had to get a 50 cab AND a dress box in order to keep my hands off the cab! Hopefully it turns into something. As others have posted, it's got a flavor profile that screams "age me" not because it's harsh and needs mellowing, but because it's so decadently rich ROTT. I've also set aside 50 cabs of HDM DC's and the Lusitania. It's going to be tough waiting to even the 5 year mark. Can't imagine waiting 10 years, but I've buried them all down deep in hopes of getting there. Too bad these big cabs don't come up more often. Anyway, having to wait 10 or 15 years on these things is where other member's opinions and experiences really help out. "Try for yourself" doesn't really work with these long timelines, and hearing from those who've gone before is most helpful! 2
Puros Y Vino Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 I've been dipping into a 50 cab of Punch DC's from 2005 since 2010. Very interesting progression over the years on this cigar. I have Lusi's from 2008/9/10 that are maturing beautifully as well. Outside of these two, the other DC's don't appeal to me that much. I found SLR's way too light. Same with HDM. Only had two VR Don Alejandro's. One was vile, the other sublime. I'm starting to enjoy RAG's and foresee a future box purchase.
golfgar Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 Nice topic, just looking for some DC's as the Punch DC's are getting low and the old Hoyo's are down to the last few.
Cubatabaco Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 For me, all of my DC's tend to have some age on them as I can't smoke that big of a cigar most of the time. It's a cigar that you buy to have one now and then. Before you know it, they're lost in the cabinet and become a magnificent find as the years pass. There is much more to add as the guys have hit all of the high points. To me, all DC's are enjoyable with age on them and tend to each have their own sweet spot. Enjoy!

That's the trouble with sampling to find what you like; you wish you could buy a fiver and be assured of it being representative of the marca and vitola, but in reality you need to sample by the box or boxes. It's damn tough and time consuming to get to know a cigar . . . guess we'll just have to smoke more!

For some damn reason I can only like this once! Hopefully they will fix that soon
garbandz Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 once is enough if you really do like it. don't look for it to be "fixed", as it is not "broken"
PigFish Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 Your reasons are your own of course, but if you are limited by resources, why invest in such an expensive format cigar? Your box of DCs could be good or bad (in general). There are no guarantees that the cigar will be good, let alone be good 25 years from now. Perhaps this is another one of those birth year cigar threads. I am not going to suggest what to buy, I just wanted you to think about what you are buying and the risks involved. Diversification of that risk by getting smaller format cigars maybe something that you wish to consider. If you are not currently enjoying DCs, such that you don't have an opinion, why stray into the unknown for this purchase? If you are a current cigar smoker, why not stick with what you know and like, a cigar that you have a high opinion of now, and perhaps can more readily afford? Just my 2cts. -Piggy
