archosaur Posted June 8, 2016 Posted June 8, 2016 Appreciate the post. I'm a big ecology and natural history fan. The natural world holds so many fascinating behaviors/adaptations/mechanisms, it's mind blowing. This is still the best book I've read on the topic (not just wolves in Yellowstone but top-down ecology in general): https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2288031.Where_the_Wild_Things_Were
Fugu Posted June 8, 2016 Posted June 8, 2016 Thanks for posting, Orion! A very impressive breakdown, in a nutshell. Tell that our farmers and huntsmen...
Narhcoc Posted June 9, 2016 Posted June 9, 2016 Well just remember there are always two sides to every coin and just because there is a well done video produced by activists, it doesn't necessarily make it accurate.

So, what's wrong about it? Mind telling us? I can give you x examples of cases of missing top predators bringing or having brought ecosystems out of balance. That's a known and scientifically well described effect (there are even reports of opposing effects where a few predators changin their strategy having immense negative impacts on ecosystem function). The cascading effects very far down the line are too often overlooked. I am not sure whether all aspects shown in this particular footage are correct in detail, some might perhaps be simplified or exaggerated for the sake of dramaturgy. But the general message is certainly correct, there is no doubt about it. And the merit of this short film is putting it nicely in a nutshell. Whether you can take this positive result from a National Park and transfer it 1:1 onto the densely inhabited civilization that's perhaps another story.

Confident in saying the other side to this coin is not worth discussing. Zero rebuttal to this argument! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
