Popular Post PigFish
For you Ken! So what would it take for me to intentionally smoke a lousy cigar? Well, I had it and it is just taking room. I have a skull full of mush, and some wanker in Oz suggested that I smoke it and tell you all about it!!! The offer from the wanker included a potential bribe! Now onto the cigar. Appearance: lousy Finish: lousy Quality of construction: lousy Aroma: okay, it has been in the company of great cigars! Taste, first third: lousy Taste, second third: only slightly better than lousy Taste, last third: don't hold your breath! -the Pig
Orion21
I feel like I was in the room smoking the cigar myself! Damn you have a way with words!

LGC
I've smoked 1... and it was just as lousy as you described. Lousy wrapper and lousy flavors. Overall... lousy.
Eric E
I have nine of these dogs left. Never understood the EL craze. Spent too much money chasing them the first two/three years to know better now. Just my opinion.

I know they are one of your favorites... -LOL ELs, well there are reasons why I dislike them. And this cigar is one damn good reason. I (unfortunately) own several boxes of Els still. They remain a reminder of foolish behavior; the folly of the untested cigar. I have this little agreement with myself. I cannot buy more ELs until all these wonderful cigars are smoked up... That few boxes could take a lifetime to smoke, thank God! -Piggy
Professor Twain
Count me in on the anti EL bandwagon. I do have to admit that beautiful Regionals are an occasional guilty pleasure. But it's rare that they are worth the extra coin. The meat and potatoes Habanos stock is so good, there is little need to dabble in the over priced specialty items. Buy a load of RASS, Monte 4s, Upmann anything, etc., age them, and enjoy them.
cigcars
I was looking at the photo of the stub left in your cute "piggy" ashtray trying to figure out, what - was it a counterfeit or something?? And then looking closer I finally figured it out - I think: "OH! It's an EL that you've so described before!" Gee - it was THAT bad!? I've been going through some EL's too despite your words of advice and wisdom that I so diligently sought from you before! They weren't that bad! But was that the reason it was so lousy for you, Ray - because it's an EL??? Inquiring minds want to know!

But was that the reason it was so lousy for you, Ray - because it's an EL??? Inquiring minds want to know! You know Janet, I certainly wish that I would get more credit than this. Don't roll back on your heels here dear lady, my response is not a jab at you, nor really the 'clown' that posted above you! What I am saying, is that just because I carry a bias, does not mean that I am prejudiced! Yes, I do 'prejudge' EL cigars as nothing better than regular production cigars! That is a determination that I stand by. Yet, I won't allow that to 'jade' a review for the sake of making my point about ELs. I do my voting for the EL program with my wallet and my candid discussion about my 'real' experience with them. If this cigar was good I would have been happy to say so... I understand that I am viewed by some as a staunch supporter of my views. There is certainly no one to blame for that other than me. Yes, I am no fan of the EL program! The question then is this. Am I in fact jaded, or can I remain objective? In my view, as I have seen past most of the BS that surrounds the cigars world, I am about as objective an individual to be found in the smoking world as can be found posting in cigar forums. So to answer your question, was this cigar bad because it was an EL, or was it just bad? I see your question as fair... albeit disappointing that I would need to be asked it. If I were to ask you (read this as anyone), "did you lie about it for a specific reason;" would you not be disappointed that I assumed, or needed to ask you if you lied? I see the question then as an attack on my character, and not then really a specific question about a specific cigar. And frankly, I am pretty sensitive about the topic of my character! Sensitive enough that I actually wrote a rather scathing reply to the 'member' that made some rather insulting innuendos in the post above yours, but simply thought better about posting it. I moved on... We are in many ways "what we write." I live with that. And at least one member (not you) has quite simply written to me that he is a moron! Now he too can live with my judgment of him. About the only ELs that I have left are the ones that were too shitty (their siblings) to smoke previously. Yes, I have a few! There was a day, one nearer to the beginning of the program, where I too was interested in these 'special' products. I too bought them. My experience has moved me away from them. My experience with them, the marketing, the cost and the concept will continue to drive me to deride the program generally, but my objectivity will not allow me to "cast" a review before the experience. So, as far as your question is concerned, I thought my 'character' would speak for itself here. You know what they say about people that assume! No, I am not mad at you for asking. No, I don't hold it against you either. I think fondly of you actually, regardless of our differences. Yes, I see things differently than most folks. Yes, I can understand if one is surprised (perhaps blindsided) that I view this as a bit of an insult!!! Yes, I was hoping that people like you, ones that may not agree with me on many things, but have known me well enough to know my character, would not have to directly ask me a question as to whether I was lying about a review! I could have easily chucked this cigar into it about 1/2 inch. I did not do that, and go light myself up a far superior (a speculative generalization) Monte 4, because I wanted to be fair. That is as just as I can be. AND YES, I was hoping that it would be assumed that I am a fair and just individual, and not have to be queried on the topic, not of the cigar, but of my ability to be fair and objective. Cheers! -Ray

PigFish
...nice of you to say gentlemen! I have to wonder. If I were to post in a review, "Is that the cigar that you taste, or the second band, the shiny box, or the twenty dollars you spent...?" How well would it go over? -Piggy
anacostiakat
Purchased a fiver of these in '05 and have absolutely no recollection of them. That in itself is a good indication of what I thought of them. I do have a box of the "D" remaining. In my cigar youth I purchased EL's but have not purchased any in quite a number of years. Just feel that the ROI for me is not in my favor.
golfgar
Thanks for posting the concise but in-depth review. Now the humidor needs checking to see if there is one hiding in there which needs to be expunged or gifted to a "friend".

Cheers! -Ray Ray, I'd never expect anyone to be "objective" about his judgement... that would be a foredoomed expectation. For that matter - I would have a hard time telling when a cigar turned out poor to my assessment, whether it had been 'because' it was an LE or not. A poor cigar is a poor cigar - period. Reasons for it will be tobacco quality - blending - construction - and, not to forget TLC. Pretty irrelevant if it bears an LE band or not. From a price point and the extra markup I concur with your disfavouring of LEs. But apart from that, it surely is a matter of personal preference (taste) and there are as many flops and gems in les LEs as there are in reg. production (from my humble and completely subjective p.o.v.).N.B. Don't want to butt in here but just to add - I didn't perceive Cigcars' post as questioning your character or "honesty", but rather as an attempt to get your personal view about whether that was a typical, personal LE-profile dislike or whether there were some additional flaws on top... (didn't come across offensive to me, but I am not the OP, I have to admit)
golfgar
Found one and smoked it last night after dinner at the club. Really not much there to get excited about. The wrapper was sort of gnarly looking.
