I'm thinking inking about getting a combo kit since there are some nice deals out there for Memorial Day and Father's Day. Ryobi is the cheapest, yet not as cheap as Black and Decker. Do you think Ryobi makes quality products or should I pay more for something like Milwaukee, Bosch, Porter Cable, etc?

Bosch Bosch and more Bosch

Ultimately you have to ask yourself what you are going to do with the tools in order to answer the question.   A poster above made a comment about corded tools. He is right on the money. You

I am not allowed to use power tools.

As others have mentioned, wait until something Milwaukee/Mikita/Dewalt comes on sale. The low end stuff doesn't stand up to anything but small household jobs.

Bosch and Dewalt fan here but have just recently bought a few ridgid products and been very impressed. The Ridgid life time warranty is hard to beat!

Love my Makitas. But it's a pro-tool. Always easy to suggest 'get the best'. You certainly won't regret it if you drop the coin, but for the occasional job something cheaper might do as well. It really depends on your needs, frequ. of use etc.

My vote is for DeWalt or Makita. I wouldn't waste (anymore) of my money on Black & Decker or most of the brands available at the big boxes. If you take decent care of the Professional grade tools you will have them forever. I love my Dewalt set, but have had good luck with Makita tools in the past.

I've had Ryobi in the past and didn't care for it. I have Mikita now and it's great. I suggest spending the extra money now for a better brand

Makita, Bosch, Milwaukee, and Dewalt are all in my collection. My personal recommendation for a combo pack is Makita. Just my opinion, but definitely don't waste your money on a Jose Piedra when for a buck more you can have a Cohiba

Buy the best you can afford.

Only buy what you need. You most likely don't NEED everything if you don't own power tools already.

One thing to note is a lot of these brands are now made at the same factories over seas just with the branding changed.

That being said avoid Porter Cable it's costing on its name as is Craftsman.  Also when it comes to saws avoid Delta unless you're dropping the money on a cabinet saw, then buy a Sawstop instead.

Ryobi is meh.  If you aren't doing heavy duty construction it's ok but as said not the greatest

Bosch is good stuff.

Biggest advice I can give you, start slow. You won't need every tool in the combo kits. Buy what you need when you need it.  Also you will always get more power/tork out of a wired tool than a cordless and batteries can die quickly and do lose charge and capacity over time especially in the cold.

Resesrch research research!

For me, Makita and Milwaukee are the best value/quality blend available for larger tools. However, I absolutely love my tiny palm size driver from Bosch, wouldn't trade it for any other small driver. I have the full Dewalt cordless kit, and am so disappointed in the battery lifespan, I thought the move from their old NiCad units to LIon would mean a longer lifespan, but no such luck, still need replacement every two years, even with just mild household use.

Now, if you want to try "the best," give a Fein unit a try. Damn expensive, but it is just dripping quality!

Thanks all for your recommendations. I've been using a cheapo Black and Decker for years which is one reason why I think Ryobi would do just fine for me. Like many have said, I'll be buying based on value as I'm not doing construction work. I'd rather save some money and give it to Rob. ;)

I'm still researching, but in Popular Mechanic's Dec. 2015 review, Makita got best overall while Ryobi got best value:

Somehow I knew this would be your recommendation

Not that I'm biased ;)

We do make some great tools, though. BTW Dremel and Skil are Bosch brands.
