cakeanddottle Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 My current cigar for coffee and cocoa notes is the Monte PE. Have I hit the right one already for those notes or are there better examples? I've seen the Magnum 46 referred to as a chocolate bomb, but reading between the lines it also looks like that might not be the case year after year. So consistently year after year, what is your recommendation for a cigar rich with coffee and cocoa notes? Thanks
Fugu Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 Chocolate and coffee are two distict flavours for me, while - admitted - you can have coffee with strong chocolate notes. I wouldn't consider the Mag46 as a chocolate poster child, for me this is more in the nutty-woody realms. The strongest (dark) chocolate experience I ever had was with the Upmann Robusto EL 2012. But not regular and hard to find these days. But for chocolaty profiles most LEs are a good bet.
westg Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 Love the Monte PE ,smoke more of them than anything else , coffee and cocoa notes for sure .Had some Monte 4 last weekend very rich with coffee notes ..they were very dark oily cigars.
Goose Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 Maybe its only me, and based on my very limited experience, the first taste i go from a Bolivar Belicoso Fino was that of a rich hot chocolate drink. Loved it and waiting for the yearly bonus to come through so that I can get a box of them.
bdurkk Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 To me, I get creamy coffee, at points latte, deep chocolate and sweet woody notes from VR line, in particular the Unicos. 2
NSXCIGAR Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 Montecristo in general has always had the market cornered on that mocha/coffee/light chocolate combo. Many times they're referred to as the "bean" flavors--cocoa, coffee, vanilla. There's also a citrus-like tangy note that goes along with those bean flavors in a good Monte. There are other cigars that deliver what many would call a darker chocolate flavor--Robaina, San Cristobal, for example, but I would describe those as having a molasses, sweet syrup with possibly some cocoa or coffee bean thrown in. Can't really say Upmann delivers the chocolate/cocoa bean flavors, at least in my experience. Straight tobacco, many times cake-like flavors, shortbread or coffee cake but never ever would I describe any Upmann as a "chocolate bomb." 2
CaptainQuintero Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 To be honest I've never got chocolate from mag 46, the aroma of the smoke is very chocolatey but I just never taste it. For pure coffee and choc I've found it most in the Monte PE like you already have. Maybe explore the Monte line deeper to see if one of different blends stand out more? The EL profile could be called chocolate and coffee, again though the most standout ones to me would be the Montecristo ones The Bolivar Petit belicoso EL certainly had expresso and dark chocolate. If you can't find a any to try then have a look at the more recent Bolivar ELs?

GavLew79 Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 VR Famosos for me, and the previously mentioned Upmann LE 2012.
TomF Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 San Cristobal de La Habana La Fuerza. Cocoa, molasses, and coffee. Beautiful! 1
BigRay023 Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 On a side note, everyone talks about coffee and cocoa in Montes. I get that citrus twang more than anything else. Don't think I have a good pallet though.

MIKA27 Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 To me, I get creamy coffee, at points latte, deep chocolate and sweet woody notes from VR line, in particular the Unicos. I couldn't agree more. Great cigar
MIKA27 Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 San Cristobal de La Habana La Fuerza. Cocoa, molasses, and coffee. Beautiful! The LaPunta also for me. I'd also like to say for me, COHIBA Magicos
ThePolskiOgorki Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 SCdlH El Principes seem to have the coffee and cocoa flavours from what I have experienced. May not be a large format but definitely one that is quickly becoming a favourite for me. Seems most cigars from the marca have these flavours as the backbone. 1
dicko Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 I'll start by saying i dont chase chocolate with cigars i prefer leather and toasted bready, nutty flavours. I agree with many above that state montecristod have that coffee cacao thing and EL's have chocolate. I also agree that h upmann is more typically toasty, woody, nutty atleast to my taste. dangolf18 Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Any Monte really. Current production Monte 4 in particular.
Sir Diggamus Posted April 20, 2022 Posted April 20, 2022 A think a lot of the answers already here are great suggestions. Chocolate or cocoa is a note I pick up a lot in Habanos, I also pick up coffee a lot but not nearly as much. And there are so many degrees. Where to start? I’ll start where I don’t see other specific recommendations. I pick up both a cocoa powder and fresh ground coffee, as well as espresso, in the Partagas Serie P no 2. More bold than a sweet expression of these notes in this cigar. Rafael Gonzalez Petit Corona for me has a cocoa edge that I occasionally pick up coffee notes with, along with a lot of earth. The RG Panatela Extra also has these notes in degrees, and can be found at a great value. I saw it mentioned a few times but a well aged VR Unicos has very rich dark chocolate and coffee notes for me. When these are on, oh boy. Bolivar PC also has a cocoa powder and chocolate and espresso notes. The ones before 2010 had a ton more earth and espresso, but I think this has been dialed back over the years. The Cohiba Siglo series with a little age has a very nice fresh ground coffee note (specifically the 4) with hints of cocoa. And the CCE for me always had a coffee bean and cocoa notes. Like some others, I don’t really pick up chocolate or cocoa in the Mag 46, that one is more rich spice and cream, maybe a little coffee here and there. I think if a mocha latte kind of note is your sweet spot than Monte is place to find it all over the marca Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
