zeedubbya Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 Just noticed on Cigar Aficianado's site the Diplomaticos Bushido is the Cigar of the week. It garnered an 89 point score. I've been lucky enough to have one gifted Bushido thus far, have seen Ken and Robs review a couple times and I have to say--are you seriously kidding me? What in the hell were they thinking! I'll repeat Kens statement to Rob--what more could you ask for? Same score as a CAO Pilon Churchill? I've had both-it's not in the same galaxy. Would like to know what others here think? Not necessarily trying to poke the bear, but wha wha wha what?
Habana Mike Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 Maybe that first inch or two before they tossed it didn't do it for them? 3
joeskow Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 My simple solution: don't buy or read the magazine 2
terrantheman Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 Who reads that **** anyway? I hope you didn't waste your money. 1
zeedubbya Posted March 12, 2016 Author Posted March 12, 2016 Like a lot of other members I actually like the magazine for its articles besides the reviews. The coverage of the Habanos Festival was pretty interesting. I have a basic level of respect for their tasting--I think for such a subjective experience they do an ok job. I just kind of thought this was a much more obvious one, and was looking for a more general feel for what the forum members think about this particular cigar. Maybe it was the wrong way to ask but it was at least a catalyst for discussion.
El Presidente Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 I can't bag CA or any other mag. I appreciate how much work goies into it and in the case of CA their place in Cigar history. I don't personally read thier reviews. It is more due to time restraints on my part. When it comes to reviews, I read those peoples whose tastes most reflect mine. On FOH I follow about a dozen members reviews. 1
zeedubbya Posted March 12, 2016 Author Posted March 12, 2016 For clarification: I read both print and online versions as I have a gifted subscription. The cigar of the week isn't in the print edition. I had a feeling this post would go off in this direction. Hence the poke the bear thing. Can I have do over with a new topic saying: What's everyone think of the Bushido? A magazine here in the states recently gave it a rating of 89, same as a Cao Pilon. I've had both and IMHO they're not even in the same Galaxy. I would like to hear your personal opinions on this rating. 2
Fugu Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 I have a basic level of respect for their tasting--.... That's actually a mandatory prerequisite for still being surprised....
alloy Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 I bought two bushidos for $65.00 in a split. Not worth it to me. Very light cocoa flavor in a two hour smoke. I thought it would be a lot more complex, but they weren't. At least I tried them. Will not buy again.
shlomo Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 Cant comment on the cigar, but since we are on topic....Rob any movement on wait list? I have been on it for well over a year now.....lol
LGC Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 Cubans are consistently inconsistent... taste is subjective... opinions will vary...

JohnS Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 Would like to know what others here think? I'll offer a possible explanation.... "A large cigar topped with tapered shoulders." So cigars with tapered shoulders are much more common in Non-Cuban cigars I understand, perhaps there's more instances of box-pressed ones too, but the idea behind a Numero 109 Cuban cigar is "prestige and class" because from what I understand, there not easy to roll, in comparison, standard parejos are simpler. "A sweet combination of nougat, fruit and leather intonations is underscored by some charred wood and an ashy note." Cigar tastings are subjective, of course we know this, but often we can forget that they can be comparative to reviewers' preferences. The above statement is not a bad explanation at capturing the idea of a Bushido. Personally, the first half of this statement I can relate to as, for me, Diplomaticos have a nice cinnamon, nutmeg and shortbread profile mainly. However, charred wood and ashy note sounds like the reviewer had a cigar that was more leathery/earthy/woody and maybe full-bodied than the Bushidos I've had. Maybe the reviewer prefers fuller-bodied, spicy cigars, who can say? If this is the case, 100 for them may be a Liga Privada No.9 (a powerful, full-bodied and slightly peppery Non-Cuban cigar) and if this is the case, than maybe this explains an 89. Tastes are subjective and can depend on preferences. I'll buy all the bushidos you don't want haha....no but seriously. Seth Haha....I'm with you Seth!
zeedubbya Posted March 12, 2016 Author Posted March 12, 2016 Great explanation! Exactly what I was looking for. 1
