This morning at work, one of my colleagues who's originally from the Midwest (Iowa) said in a conversation we were having "When the merger happens they'll 86 the expletive". I'd never heard the term...ever! I like to consider myself pretty hip to the game when it comes to slang etc, especially listening to so much bad arse rap music, but this ones got me. Or is it a term thats left for old timers hole.gif

Obviously, I knew what it meant in the context of the conversation being get rid of someone but now I wonder...Do many Americans use this term, is it just a Midwest thing? After a quick look around it seems I've been pretty blind to it as it's referenced in heaps of TV and movies I've watched. Where it originates is up for debate also.

Please tell me I'm still cool without knowing what he meant. (Puts sunnies on while sweating furiously)

Have a good weekend all!

I could see it originating in either restaurant kitchens or with semi-truck radio codes.

Either means removed, sold out, gone, etc...

commonly used in australia and has been for as long as i can recall. not just a person. dumping a plan or something of that ilk probably even more appropriate.

no idea where it came from.

Jesus mate, http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=86'd

So uncool.

I may just unfollow you on Instagram.

I know I know. I'm getting kitchen talk, gang bangin', booze talk and Ken telling me it's been around here in Australia for as long as he can recall (not sure how long that is) but I feel somewhat ashamed. Sometimes you have to set the bird free mate. Do what you gotta do!

I wonder if it's true that "back in the days" if the patron was too boozed from the 100 proof they would serve them the 86 proof. Maybe that's why it has association of throwing something out. booting out patrons.

Mods. Lock/delete the thread. I'm still cool contrary to the above smartarses.

Used in Florida and throughout the south by Boomers frequently. Also used by the military. Another is File 13.

Love all krit's projects

DO NOT get All My Life. Trash. I wouldn't exactly call it his project or new.

It meant making somebody "DEAD". To "86" somebody meant and picture the finger swiping the throat in symbolic statement. That's what it meant in my younger days anyway.
