TheLiquidGator Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 This one is a classic. The cone of silence
zeedubbya Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 I learned the term in a restaraunt as well. If you were out of something you would tell the servers to "86" it off the menu. If something had gone bad you would "86" it. The Executive Chef I worked for (who was ex. US Navy) once saw it written on a piece of paper by someone and said it was AT-6 not 86. A military term apparently? We thought he was a little nuts, but I read up on it some and it's plausible he was not wrong.
RijkdeGooier Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 I rather liked these all: http://mentalfloss.com/article/51880/where-did-term-86-come
JamesNYC Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 Wierd. My business partner just brought this term up 2 days ago when talking to a new staff member about his way younger days working in a restaurant using "monkey dishes" for small sides dished out from a bigger dish (like cole slaw or pickles) and then running out of items that would be "86"ed from the menu that day. We were talking about these things the day before his 64th birthday, just to put this expression in context.
