ChefBoyRG54 Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Flavor profile. I don't usually like earthy or leathery smokes and gravitate towards medium and light bodied anyway.I'm with you there. I like wrappers somewhere from light to a reddish hue
cigaraholic Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 I'm not a huge fan of the hybrids they grow today, just don't seem to have the look or the pop of the older leaf. So I always want dark wrappers on everything, especially important on the full bodied smokes like Partagas and Bolivar.
Smallclub Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Quai d'Orsay, specially the corona claro. The blend simply doesn't work with a darker wrapper, IMHO.
Bartolomeo Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Off top of my head... PL RE's and Pics LGC Pariso Caribe RE Monte DE Choix Customs
jwr0201 Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 With CC's, so long as flavor is excellent and construction is good, I am not so much concerned with the wrapper. In the NC world, for me darker is better. A nice LFD Cabinet Oscuro or DE No 9 that are nearly black are my preference. Next up would be a nice, dark T52. Speaking of which...why are there few, if any, Cuban Oscuros?
stigmata Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 True about the qdo coronas and the hupmann Connie 1 Love them terribly with lighter wrappers.
maxcjs0101 Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 As long as the wrapper looks supple (not too dry), i will smoke it.
TheMonk Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Quai d'Orsay, specially the corona claro. The blend simply doesn't work with a darker wrapper, IMHO. Very true.
demisecphuket Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 BHK 56 wrapped in caramel coloured silk
demisecphuket Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Genios wrappers like naomi campbell's arse - thin, black and smooth
mk05 Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Take construction as a given. It is hard to enjoy a cigar with poor construction. However wrapper? Do you find that some cigars just "sing" with a certain wrapper? ( be it Oscuro/Rosado/Claro/Colorado/Colorado+) let us know your experiences, What do YOU seek in any particular marque/vitola ...what do you hope for. None. Color does not matter. What is important is the content. I'd submit that asking a skewed question will result in a certain expected answer set. I'll take a pitch black, pale white, or light green Hoyo Epi #2 from La Corona over a perfect looking Hoyo Epi #2 from Vegueros. If I take Hoyo Epi #2 from AME13 - a cigar from a great year and great factory - one light and one dark, they will taste the same. However, if I take a Hoyo Epi #2 from AME13 vs a perfect looking RAE13, AME13 will win objectively, in terms of delivering a Hoyo taste. Nevertheless, I understand that visual component is a big factor to most - I mean, just look at how much effort goes into band art. But do yourself a favor and start taking the band off your cigars. You'll pay attention to taste more. However, when one makes an analogy to Non Cubans and their manufacturers, where their rollers and so called blenders crossed over without any notion or understanding of curing/fermentation steps, you have to remember that they are selling their product, which is missing the most crucial step in the integration of the cigar. These NCs are a wrapper driven product - the taste is all wrapper, and some manufacturers don't even deny it. Therefore, it is simply comparing apples to oranges. 1
Orion21 Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 I am one person who thinks wrappers do deliver more than 10% of the flavor to the cigar - but only if it's bordering on, or is, maduro. I have found the cigars with blends designed for flavor vs power/strength do much better with thin Colorado, or lighter, wrappers. As long as the wrapper has proper amounts of oil and small veins I have never been disappointed (Cohiba, QdO, Trinidad and PL). It's when the thicker maduro style wrappers are applied to cigars where the issue occurs. I have seen it too often on EL cigars where the thick maduro wrapper causes issues with the combustion and flavors of a well blended cigar. I love a nice dark wrapper on a Partagas, Upmann or Bolivar . . . as long as it's on the thinner side. Then there are the cigars that I enjoy somewhere in the middle. There is nothing like a good RyJ or Punch with a thin reddish wrapper. Those babies always seem to deliver. Or even an SCDLH with a slightly caramel brown and glistening wrapper that just screams sweetness. My issue is not all of the dark wrappers on so many of the cigars coming out of Cuba, but the wrappers the cigars are on. I agree with Small Club, I would prefer a QdO Corona with a light wrapper. I have a box of light and a box of dark wrapped QdO Corona and I much prefer the lighter box. The lemon citrus really comes out of those. The darker wrapped box are nothing like them - much darker.
ayepatz Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 All the Mag 46s I have bought have had darker wrappers, but ironically the best I ever had was from Duty Free Lacquered 2 cigar box, paired with a Mag 50. The 50 was splendid in every way, but the 46 was simply otherworldly. One of the best cigars I have ever smoked. It had a light wrapper.
MrGTO Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 R&J no4 needs a slightly darker rosado wrapper with a nice sheen for me. The first box I had were like this and I couldn't believe how great they were so I bought that box code when they were PSP quality only. They have never disappointed yet.
