BonVivant Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 post-revolution is not pre-revolution and MRN did admit that he knows nothing about pre-revolution cigars Why not ask the the seller? most reasonable route, no?
NSXCIGAR Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 ^^ True, MRN openly acknowledges he knows very little of pre-revolution CCs. Excellent info Ryan. And very interesting as well. Nothing can be ruled out when it comes to pre-rev CCs. With something like this, as would be the case with most pre-rev CCs, particularly very unique and rare pre-rev CCs, provenance is king. I would want to be able to trace the history of these particular individual cigars as far back as reasonably possible before I even considered thinking about possibly shelling out a dime for them. And it sounds like there's not much info to gather on the history of this prehistoric "Cohiba" brand. IMO that only decreases their potential market value. No history/story equals no mystique, and that means no dice. If these came out of Alfred Dunhill's personal collection with photos or credible eyewitness testimony, then they're a museum piece as far as I'm concerned. Short of that, they could be donkey poop. The bands might be worth something if they're real, which they appear to possibly be. But the cigars themseves--that's a big question mark. I would gladly fire one up to test it, however.
JoeyGunz Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Are they selling the bands and just advertising them on the cigars for the pictures? You could interpret this that way.
monkey66 Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 So the bands were on ebay and now the cigars are being auctioned. 2+2=? Nb - there were several hundred Cuban Dunhill bands on Ebay last month. To be fair they may be real, as has been stated there were thousands of pre revolutionary marcas but I would never buy that kind of cigar without very, very strong provenance. Come to think of it unboxed 5ers of pre-r never seen cigars may be the easiest htf to counterfeit. There are sites selling old cuban bands as collectors items.
Ryan Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 So the bands were on ebay and now the cigars are being auctioned. 2+2=? Please don't get me wrong, I said that I bought bands on Ebay. I never said that the ones in the picture were. I first came across those old Cohiba bands in about 2012 when I bought a book of old bands in Havana. There was one in there. I couldn't fnd anything on the internet, I searched every 6 months or so. Then about 2 years ago, I bought two more off Ebay, a spanish seller selling old bands, not just those Cohiba ones. I paid no more than about 4 euros each for them, for those thinking about "investing in bands". I brought one to Cuba last year to give to Punch Joe, he collects old bands. He already had a few that he had found over the years in Cuba.
Coloniales Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 I have seen Pre Revolution Cohiba bands over the years. Nice info. Andy. As for the authenticity of these no idea. I think I know the cigars originated with. Keith.

monkey66 Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Just an observation of the relitave ease of faking this kind of cigar (in 5vers).
oliverdst Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 I am confident they are not fake based on the seller reputation. He wouldnt auction something like that if he wasnt sure about the provinence.
Smallclub Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 I am confident they are not fake based on the seller reputation. He wouldnt auction something like that if he wasnt sure about the provinence. You would be surprised... 1
oliverdst Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 You would be surprised... Really? That's concerning. And now I remember someone saying something about a box of Cohiba Reserva...
wabashcr Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 I am confident they are not fake based on the seller reputation. He wouldnt auction something like that if he wasnt sure about the provinence. I always thought that was the case as well. However, someone out there apparently disagrees, as when you google his name, the second result is a website that alleges some pretty bad things. Who knows what to believe anymore? Buyer beware. 1

Getting close to the forbidden zone mentioned in the original post but when I first read your comment I was sure you were kidding. It's exactly the reputation that concerns me here.
NSXCIGAR Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 I would not rely on any seller's/consigner's word or reputation regarding items of this nature. I have had experiences with this individual as well that I won't go into, but that's immaterial in terms of items like this. Regarding items of this nature, I need to see some serious provenance and history with my own eyes. I'm knowledgeable enough to evaluate that provenance myself. Now, someone who is a pre-rev CC specialist may have other info or knowledge, but this is a particular item where no one's reputation or word counts for much, good or bad. Pre-rev specialists and their inner circle may know exactly what these are and have greater insights into their authenticity.

Geez!!! What is that? Thanks, bro.

It's exactly the reputation that concerns me here. Now I know. I never made business with him (auction or shop) because of poor GBP currency to me so I've never worried about him but I am really surprised.

Ryan Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 Guys, please don't go down this road. This thread is about pre-revolution Cohibas, not anybody's reputation. It's not relevant to this thread and more discussion of it will make it go away. Any more comments about any retailer or hinting at rumors or websites about what any retailer "might have done" will be hidden. 3

If we are talking about unknown bands the seller reputation is very important.
MPS Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 Ryan, I disagree. If we are talking about unknown bands the seller reputation is very important. That website was started by a known scumbag/con artist (who is a member here) who ripped off plenty of good people with fake cigars and stills owes them money. He has a long history of star****ery. He's also maligning another member of the cigar community so people will think he has actual cred.
earthson Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 So, who's going to buy them, evaluate and give us the review? You know, take one for the team in the name of Cigar History. 1
