Hi Folks,

I have been recently doing some research into finding out what my next box purchase should be. I would like to try a CC cigar brand that I have not yet tried. This has led me to The Saint Luis Rey Serie A. After searching our group's forms and a variety of other websites, I have read nothing but good things about it. Our host has even provided positive reviews as well as others. Even outside of our forms people have not said a bad thing about them and most ratings at between 90 and 92.

So why are these not popular? Do they not age well? Is it the plain looking band? I don't get it but I may buy a box to find out on my own. What are your thoughts on this?

Don't purchase a box of Serie A if you have never had a Saint Luis Rey cigar before.

Min Ron Nee wrote "(it) is not a brand for everyone" and I tend to agree.

If you want to get an idea of the blend, the Regios (robusto of the marca) is widely available.

Personaly I much prefer the Serie A, I find it more balanced, but I've always had the patience to let my boxes age several years. Why it has almost disappeared, I have no idea…

I don't have a whole lot of experience with SLR as a whole, but a Serie A with some age if pretty hard to beat. I have recently been smoking through a box from '09 and they are fantastic. However, I didn't care too much for them when they were young.

SLR is a smaller overlooked marca in the Habanos portfolio. I personally Love the A and the Regios, but it's not a blend for everyone.

Warning!! Do not buy any SLR!!! Save yourself. I will do the honorable thing and buy them all so no one has to suffer!!jester.gif

Let me reassure you, they were very popular at Havanathon last October (3 months ago) and I didn't have any issues splitting a box in June last year either. lol3.gif

Let me just say I have seen PSP SLR A's show up on the 24:24 a couple of times in the last few months and I have failed to be fast enough to snag any. It irks me to no end I can't get my hands on them when they come up. I may have to just roll the dice on these soon and hope for the best. It especially irks me I missed out on the last batch the Rob said were some of the best cigars he's ever seen . . . period!!

I'll chime in and say first I love the Serie A, it has a flavor all it's own that I appreciate. Second, maybe try some singles first if you can OR do a box split to try them before committing to a full box...peace.gif

Had an aged SLR recently from a buddy. Fantastic smoke. Was 08 iirc. Had a cc very unique profile with an overtone of honey sweetness that was rich and chewy

Only box I've had multiple 50 cabs of. It's a winner!

Hello Fellow FOHers,

As Orion mentioned, Rob just recently had some on 24:24, which were some of the best cigars he has seen! Those are pretty strong words for a guy who gets to play with cigars all day every day! I have just a couple left from an '08 box, so I was lucky enough to get a box from that recent offering. I am anxiously awaiting their arrival to our snowy and cold climate, where they will enjoy a long and peaceful rest before meeting the fire.

Thank you and best wishes,
Curtiss

What does "not for everyone" mean? They are great. Certainly more enjoyable than the FAR more popular mag 46 imo....patience is key and then everyone will enjoy them. Tremendous.

I haven't had one of these yet but they are definitely on my to try list if they come up on a 24:24.

With a bit of age, I have 07 and 08, and they are amazing.

Someone called them "strong," I would say that about Regios but the Serie A has always been mild to my own palate . . . of course tastes vary. But I can see why it might leave some people unsatisfied.

SLR is my favourite marca, the DC and the Serie A are fantastic cigars. I find they offer something very unique to the habanos lineup which my palate enjoys very much. Its a shame that the DCs are so hard to come by at the minute.

I heard that they are discontinued or will be.

So I have been stocking up the last couple of months.

In my experience, with the exception of the churchill, all the SLR line was stronger before the mid-2000's. After 2005 (approx.), only the corona could qualify as a ± strong cigar.

Inclined to agree Smallclub, but are we talking of nicotine-strong or strong in body? The latest DCs I had (from a '12 or '13 cab, can't quite remember) gave me a noticeable nicotine buzz. They would therefore certainly qualify as a strong cigar for me. Tastewise, Id say the DC is only medium body, the SerieA med-full. The Churchill truly being (or sadly having been...) the mildest.

All that said - for me, the Serie A, in particular from the cab, is a classy cigar.
