Reading mixed reviews regarding recent production of RASS. Curious how they are smoking and whether it's a better idea to pay a higher price for the Superiores?

Posted

I havent smoke a rass in over a year just got bored of them. The Superiores are absolutely rich and flavorful. I have 7 boxes ranging from 2011 to 2014 all consistant.

Last box of RASS I've purchased was 2013, and they are solid. I've bought 2 boxes(2013,2014) of Superiores and got another on the way. Seems whenever I buy anything lately I add a box of Superiores. When it comes to Ramon Allones right now, superiores are what I'm buying.

Hi Vinny,

I am rather surprised as RASS cabs are generally a pretty safe bet, and I have had other MUR 13 boxes which have been excellent as well.

I hope you just happened upon a lone wolf who lost his way, and you will be reporting back to us what wonderful cigars the rest of them are.

Thanks for sharing and best wishes,
Curtiss

Another cab of RASS MUR SEP 13 just landed yesterday.

They are terrible.

This is all about individual tastes. I have traded '14 RASS that to me are un-smokable to guys that are looking for that punch in the face. I traded them for superiors that he found unsmokable. I love the superiors and he loves the RASS. Guaranteed, if you think something is great someone else thinks it is terrible and the other way around. That is one thing I love about cigars; what you enjoy is entirely up to you!

To me the 14 & 15 RASS aren't coming out of my humi for a taste test for at least a couple of years. They will rest while I smoke the superiores.

Sarcasm maybe?? I assume so because of the "another" indicating the same code was purchased before.

Dayum Mike, 7 boxes!!!

I'll tell ya what, I smoked one of mine out my box (1st box purchase too I will add) and I WILL definitely be buying another box or two, but I totally get why you are hoarding them Mike.....I thought they were rare though....guess not.

RAE Abr 15 RASS. First couple last fall were wonderful. Not the case lately, however, and I haven't made it past halfway on the last two I've had before pitching them. I've put 'em down deep for awhile. Superiores are another story completely. Delicious cigar. ULA Mar 15 smoking beautifully right now.

OPG DEC 14. PSP quality though not from here. I've smoked two. Full flavor and complete punch in the face. The second one was so strong it took me an hour to regain color. Clearly various factors cone into play but I'll be letting these mellow a bit before I revisit!

RASS are my favorite cigar and I have been smoking through them since about 2008. I cannot recall a young one ever having a nicotine kick that made me turn green. They are considered full body by Cuban standards, but lean towards medium-full for myself. Try drinking a sugary drink next time you smoke one such as a Coke or sweetened Iced Coffee.

NYC, had smoked two Upmann Connie 1's Friday, a BPC Sat and this was Sunday, after lunch with a sweetened coffee. It was only the second I've had from this box. Minimal touch ups but I did smoke it to the nub. The next hour was horrible, maybe the worst od since my first cuban in 1997. No explanation.

Been loving me some 11 Connie 1s. What a great smoke. Curious that there are such divergent views on RASS. See it often out there these days.

Had a 13 today from a cab and it was great. Haven't had anything newer but hope there good because I'd like to pick another cab up soon so it can sit while I enjoy the ones I have.

Considering the Superiores are still relatively inexpensive, I would definitely spring for them over RASS (although I have plenty of Superiores and RASS in the humi). I have stocked up on several boxes of MUR OCT 12 Superiores as I find them to be smoking phenomenally well right now with loads of aging potential. I also think this is a cigar that if ever discontinued, will quickly triple in value (like the Gold Medals).

After reading this thread I decided to pull out a RASS (ULA ABR 15) from my FOH purchased cab of 50 tonight paired with a glass of Berringer Cabernet and headed to the garage. The draw and construction of this cigar is outstanding, with an even burn all the way through to the finger burning end. It reminds me of the D4 in some ways but this is better and fuller flavor wise. I also have and enjoy the Superiores as well and the RA lineup has become a favorite of mine. The RASS are not a regular smoke for me as I intend to let the rest continue to age so I can enjoy these for years to come. No regrets in buying these.

When it comes to RASS over the past year to 18 months, quality has been a little all over the place. If anything they have gone backwards in consistency. To me it is about getting the right box/cab. In relation to cabs, I didn't see too many bad ones at all.

Given they are 10 count boxes it's really like buying a cabinet vs 7 boxes of 25. One of my favorite sizes and love the flavor profile, my top 2 cigars. Not rare as they are continually produced but you never know when they may ax em.

Looks like a perfect smoke! What % are you keeping them and how long ago did you get them? Mine was wonky, albeit outdoors.
