Store in boxes or remove and store on shelves?

I have a standard wineador that is performing superbly, but I am looking to get more storage room. I find that if I remove the trays and go with stacking boxes, I can get about 75% more usable storage room. Since moving into CC's, my stock has likely doubled in short order and will continue to climb! Question is if most with wineadors store in boxes or remove and store naked sticks on shelves/trays?

My 2 cents is keep the really nice looking drawers in the wineador and buy a cooladore or tuppadore for box storage. Maybe it's just me, but a wineador w a boatload of boxes crammed in it doesn't look that great and kind of defeats the purpose. I mean if not for looks just get a huge cooler - cheaper and it stores more.

Unfortunately, here in hot, humid Florida, summer temps loom well over the 70 degree mark inside and humidity is high as well. Tupperdors or coolers would only serve as ovens. Keeps us from brewing lagers even in winter! Tried to do steam style lager twice and both times, temps went too high - had to toss the whole 5 gal batches. We can, however do some killer ales! buddies.gif

While I have an end table cabinet and not a wineador, I store full boxes only. Even loose sticks go into a box. If I were you remove all shelves/or racks from the wineador and simply stack the boxes. Shelving obviously take up unnecessary room. When your wineador is filled, simply buy another and start filling the new one.

I've never read or heard anything suggesting there's any advantage to storing cigars loose as opposed to original packaging in any environment from humidor to wineador. Standard practice for generations has been storing and aging cigars in original packaging so there's no reason in my mind to deviate from that. And it does maximize available space, so to me it's a no-brainer.

I store in boxes as the time that I tried storing them loose many ended up with cracks, etc.

I do take them all out of my tupperdores once a week, pop the tops, let them breath and then rotate the stock. Really it's probably more for the aesthetic pleasure but it also gives me the chance to pull what I want for the next weekend.

I too have suffered cracks from being loose on trays. I like to keep them in boxes. I do however keep 50 or so daily cheapo's in a desk top humi. That way I don't have to keep opening the coolidor.

I was told by the manager of a cigar store (LCDH) to store in original boxes, in zip lock bags, and open the bags up every month or so.

He said that the flavors of each cigar will stay more true to the cigar, and storage with multiple marcas and cigars will lead to a melding of flavors. But although that seems to make sense, I don't really know.
