schubb Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 This is one that was just a little intimidating size-wise. I've never had a double corona before, so this is the largest cigar I've ever smoked at 194x49. However, with the competition and an unusually warm Friday afternoon for January, I've decided to go for it. I settled in for a 2+ hour smoke with just some water. This long cigar has a little bit of bend in it over the length, I assume from a tight ribbon in the cab. Start: 12:17pm 1st third: Starts out mild, with some nice light floral and fruity sweetness. Only other SLR I've had is the Regios, and the fruit reminds me of that but just a bit lighter. Creamy too, with maybe just a touch of nuttiness? The burn and draw on this were perfect from the start to the end. 2nd third: Body just slowly increased over the length of the cigar, though the strength remained below medium I'd say the whole time. The base flavors from the 1st third just slowly intensified over time. A little bit of earth and wood just slowly started to creep. Final third: At this point the wood and earth have moved towards the front, and the rest has fallen back just a bit. I'm guessing this is due to relative youth in the cigar, and I'd bet this would just get better with time. Finally put it down around 2:26pm. Final smoke time was about 2 hours and 9 minutes. I really enjoyed this. One day I would like to get a cab of these, though since they only come in 50 it might be a bit. I've had some good larger format cigars recently and this has me interested in other double coronas now. 2
RDBM Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Great review, thanks for posting. Love how you keep track, is that something you made up yourself ?
schubb Posted January 19, 2016 Author Posted January 19, 2016 Great review, thanks for posting. Love how you keep track, is that something you made up yourself ? Can't take credit, its the 33 Cigars notebook from amazon: http://www.amazon.com/33-Books-Co-Cigars/dp/B00513EW5U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453162599&sr=8-1&keywords=33+cigars Its really a nice way to keep track of my thoughts to go back, and its not that expensive. Its kinda small so you really have to be concise but its so better than just random notes I was taking before.
busdriver Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Great review. The SLR DC is the ony current production that I dont have. Def want to try these! Thanks for the cigar review booklet as well!

ChampagneInHand Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Liked this review. Partagas makes wonderful doubles and if you prefer the shape Presidente are almost as long and high,y enjoyable. "What should we start with?" "An '82 Margaux." "Is it good?" "Good? It will make you believe in God!"
irratebass Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Nice review Schubb, and thanks for the link.....have been looking at these books for about 2 weeks now....haven't pulled the plug yet. Maybe these will be my CC books only, since this is the year for CC's? Hmmm, I think I just talked myself into this heh.
parabola66 Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 That is a great little notebook. I will definitely be getting throwing that in my cart next time I order something from Amazon. At what point in the cigar do you fill out the flavor wheel? As the cigar progresses, how do you know when to take note on the wheel?

The next time a 10 count is offered I might just have to pull the trigger. Maybe I'll get some Presidentes singles with my next order, I got a Partagas Salomones from our host in a sampler recently that I am very much looking forward to trying, its another big boy. I've been using mine for just CC's, as I've decided this is also my year for them for my majority of cigars. Should be a good year once it warms up a bit in the spring. 1

At what point in the cigar do you fill out the flavor wheel? As the cigar progresses, how do you know when to take note on the wheel? You could probably do it whenever you feel comfortable. I do it as I go along, because usually in the first couple inches I've got an idea of where its sitting for some initial judgments, then I just lengthen the lines as the flavors become more bold/defined or move along the wheel as others come out. I don't think I added the lines for the wood/earth until at least the halfway point for this one. You could probably also just do it at the end as well.
irratebass Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 I ordered the book yesterday....should arrive tomorrow.....thanks again for the info.
