El Presidente Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 I probably run the one of the lowest B&M humidity levels in the world. Our walk in humidor here at Czars runs at 63%-65% range as that is where I like to have most of my retail cigars that will be consumed either immediately or in the short term (3-4 days). Local members don't complain so I have haven't changed it. Temp 18 degrees centigrade. On Line humidor runs at 65%-67% RH but a lot colder at 16 degrees centigrade. My personal stock for consumption at home is split. For sub 46 gauge I run at 58-62 RH. That is my sweetspot. For + 46 gauge and I run at 65% RH. Two separate humidors. It is all subjective I know. As an aside, does anyone else notice that different vitolas (roughly bunched as I have) smoke better to you at different humidity levels? Would love your insight as there is something that I may not have tried 3
madandana Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Ya I'm at 61-62 RH. That's my sweet spot for flavor and proper burn. Seems to be best for all sizes.
Fugu Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Interesting that you relate this to vitola, Rob. Have to admit, I haven't thought about that much so far. If at all, I would consider a dryer acclimatization for larger or longer vitolas advantegeous, as they have more room/length to accumulate the moisture generated by combustion. I also go for the lower rH, and I have to say, you are not alone, my preferred B&M here also stores at lower rH (about 64-65 but at 20°C). Always perfect and ready to smoke. I once even had to 'defend' him against other customers, who considered that too low.
skalls Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 I've got 2 coolers. The 48qt one holds nothing but NCs and that is kept at 67-69%. The 128qt which holds just boxes and mostly CCs is 65-66%. Been giving me pretty solid results so far.
Wrangler Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 I would like to keep mine at 63rh..... I can't get my rh to stabilize in my new humidor!!! First world problems....LOL 2
FHFinster Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Been storing at 65% and smoking at 55%. Loving the lower humidity...But it sucks waiting days for my sticks to dry out in the desktop humi.
mgravito Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 I like to store between 62-64%. Dry box for about a day before smoking. When I first started this hobby I used to store at 68-70 and it makes for a pretty unpleasant smoke, IMO. 1
maxcjs0101 Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 I'd prefer mine to be about 65%. But when i decide im going to smoke one, i'll leave it in the open for a few days. Works for me everytime.
Rye Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 63% and everything is ready to smoke. Really dry here most of the year so dry boxing isn't needed 1
danny Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 I generally store at 65-67 and smoke at a solid 62. Seems to be right on the money for most cigars. Some do need to be dry-boxed a bit more though.
dicko Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Im at 67-69% for storage but i nearly always dry box until i feel a slight dry crinkle sound when i roll them in my fingers not sure what RH that would be at.
ElAbogado Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Currently at 65%, seriously considering moving everything down to 62%. Flavors good at 65, but it seems I still need to make several touch-ups while smoking. I also live in a mostly muggy/humid climate for most of the year.
SipIt Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 I'm baffled by the 70/70 recommendation. Life is so much easier between 58-63RH. Temp doesn't really matter to me as long as it's between 55 and the low 70'sF. 2
shlomo Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Most of these numbers are meaningless. Temperature is just an itsy bitsy tiny bit important with regards to RELATIVE humidity. I keep my long rerm humi at around 60-60 give or take 1. Coolers at 63 temp/62 rh in winter, 60 temp/64 rh in summer.
JohnS Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Rob, the levels that you have the walk-in humidor and online humidor (to me) are fine, ditto the levels in your personal humidor. Different rh for different vitolas is something I've not considered before...how interesting! I've settled on 65rh for my long-term aging/resting cigars and 62rh for my 'go-to' cigars. This is what works for me (after much experimentation). Edward Sahakian keeps the Davidoff London store walk-in humidor at 12½°C and 65rh (maximum). It took me awhile to find the reference where I learnt this, but I did in the James Suckling video link below... http://www.jamessuckling.com/sahakian-suckling-davidoff-shop.html 4
soutso Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Excellent thread. Especially given that it was started by a vendor. Given that this is your hobby and livelihood, not many would match your level of knowledge Rob. I store mine at 60RH and 21 degrees Celsius. I have built myself one of Pigfish's units this I've control over both RH and temp. I'm aware that there are theories on temp and RH settings for stock one wishes to age or consume asap and theories based on RG too. I find my settings give me the best flavour.
LeafLover Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 58-62 and I forget about it. Just fine. Just using beads. I'm planning on getting my aristocrat soon and for some reason I'm thinking of just putting in beads and foregoing the THC unit altogether.
subport Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 70F/66%Rh dryboxing in an old desktop humi for a day or two
Raginaharjar Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 62-63% Rh for me. I think 65% and above gives problems with the draw on smaller vitolas.
anacostiakat Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 I like mine set at around 65%. But it is seasonal because it can get/stay in 90's (F) easily in the summer and it is 22 (F) right now in the winter. Have thought about adding a dehumidifier for the summers but haven't gotten around to it yet.
irratebass Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Like a majority I like mine between 58-62 for all vitolas.
kyriakos Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Im at 67-69% for storage but i nearly always dry box until i feel a slight dry crinkle sound when i roll them in my fingers not sure what RH that would be at. This !!
