20 years ago Propylene Glycol was a manstream item in most peoples desk top humidors (to regulate humidity).

I haven't heard of it for a long time. I can only assume many have moved to humidification beads but I wondered yesterday if members still find a use for it?

I was looking back to my some of my purchases when I opened my first walk in humidor in 1996. It was interesting to see Propylene Glycol and Pheromone Traps as two of my initial purchases.

J Nelson (used to run the Perdomo Lounge in Brisi) still uses it exclusively in everything from his small desktops up to his 2500 count cabinet.

Seems to work for him but i'll stick to beads and boveda packs

Not me, says I. Heartfelt beads and boveda packs. Eventually I'll go active humidification, but for now it works well and I have no complaints.

Cheers,

Boveda packs...they work wonders!

To add further, I was having this conversation with my son this morning on the way to school. I was telling him how I've enjoyed some great cigars from my humble tupperdor/s, humidified with boveda packs, this year which I've shared with others.

I store my cigars in a dark, cool place with stable temperature all year round. Also, the average relative humidity in my place is about 51rh in winter to 65 rh in summer, so I find my boveda packs last a very long time...easily 6 to 9 months without a problem!

No Glycol, just Boveda.

Seriously don't understand why more B&M stores don't stock beads and Boveda packs and oust the 50/50 mixture altogether. Agree with the Alexanders comment. John still swears by it.

I have used PG for years, it maintains a stable RH and it's a very efficient antifungic (=no mold). Unfortunately, it has became very difficult to find in France as it goes into the ingredients of some makeshift explosives fuel.gif

I only use it my radiator. :)

Beads for me I think XIKAR still use some sort of Propylene Glycol solution with their gel bead systems

Yes -- but then again I don't know anyone who uses that system. I'm sure there must be people who do, but they're invisible to me.

I actually have a few bottles kicking around.

But beads and Boveda for me now.

That's why I still have some bottles.

I use beads in my winedor, and currently us Boveda packs in my coolerdor. For some reason I thought that Boveda was PG. I guess I should do more research before I spread bad information.

Isn't it PG in the Boveda packs that holds the water?

Unsure...?

Even if it is, it's not an issue that it were PG but moreso the maintenance to keep spraying the solution to the sponge within the humidor versus hassle free Boveda pack that's self managed.

I don't know if their ingredient list is pulic, but Boveda packs are two way humidification and PG solution based products are not. I don't believe they have PG.

If they are, it doesn't do much as I recharge my bovedas with distilled water and get the same performance out of them

Yep. I just have to remember to stop recharging them before they swell up like a balloon and no longer fit in the cedar holder I use in my desktop!

Direct from Boveda site. Sorry a bit off topic from original post.

"It’s well known in science that certain salts mixed with water will naturally regulate humidity. We just patented the way that made it practical for packaging. All other packaging inserts either add moisture or remove moisture. Only Boveda does both, monitoring the RH (relative humidity) inside the container and regulating to the specific RH engineered into the Boveda.

Available in multiple sizes and humidity levels, Boveda is the only company in the world that can solve your intermediate moisture need and maintain the ideal moisture content of the items inside your container. Boveda uses all FDA-compliant ingredients and won’t damage anything through direct contact. The life of any Boveda depends how much moisture it releases, which will vary based on climate and container. You’ll know it’s time to replace Boveda when it’s no longer pliable."

Sounds like salts, science, and patents.
