westg Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 I don't really like the boxes ..over the top, very tacky
Guest rob Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 A little P.S. the original Behike Humidor - rolled by one roller, special humidor presentation, hand written bands...... yada. yada. yada. Pinky out collector special.... Seriously - what's the diff? The Behikes by all accounts were actually good.
Colt45 Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 The Behikes by all accounts were actually good. Perhaps - I've smoked neither the Behike nor the Gurkhas mentioned, so I can't comment. But from the marketing / packaging / target buyer perspective, I see little difference.
Paul3 Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 I'd like to buy Mr. Hansotia a cigar as a thanks for the laughs this story provided.
wabashcr Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 There is obviously a market of wealthy people and celebrities who see cigars as a status symbol first, and care very little about the actual quality. These people aren't serious cigar smokers, and probably give cigars about five minutes of thought a year. They probably attend one or two social events a year where they think it looks good to break out a $5k cigar. Gurkha doesn't care what people like us think. They know we think they're a joke. What they do and what we do are two completely different worlds. I don't know why cigar people get so worked up whenever this comes up. They do their thing. We do ours. 2
sactochris Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 It's working for the guy. That's for sure. Gurkha's are one of the top sellers at the shop I work at.
garbandz Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 There is also a lucrative investment angle with regard to Gurkha cigars. For example, the HMR line in 1996 was selling at $5,000 a box and now sells for $35,000. “We had a box that we had made only for the Millennium that came out in 1999, which sold to close to $4,000 each. And now that same box sells for $85,000, so you could imagine the return,” said Hansotia. So who are the individuals buying these ultra-premium smokes? Cannot stop laughing. This guy should go into comedy................. We have our ultra-premium buyers, which are collectors, the super affluent, if you are a millionaire, you smoke Davidoff, if you are a billionaire, you smoke Gurkha Stop, stop,I can't breathe.................
Lotusguy Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 The more cigars sold, the better for our hobby and the stronger the resistance against the antismoking lobby. So while I am certainly not in the Gurkha target demographic, I welcome his efforts. 1
Kyoung Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 EL OH EL! would be interesting to take the bands off and let people decide just how premium they really are...
Drguano Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 Ha this quote was pretty funny too "You could buy a Ferrari before you could buy one of our boxes.[/size] This is the quote that stood out for me too. I read it as "I would buy a Ferrari before I would buy a box of Ghurkas." For that matter, I would buy a Yugo before I would buy a box of Ghurkas. I can't think of much I wouldn't buy before I bought a box of Ghurkas.

nick2021 Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 I can't stand reading the crap/fake PR articles his company pumps out. But I guess they can be good for a laugh... this is one of the better ones from that article: “We have our ultra-premium buyers, which are collectors, the super affluent, if you are a millionaire, you smoke Davidoff, if you are a billionaire, you smoke Gurkha." You'd be amazed at how many Gurkha fans there are in our Afghanistan NATO cigar club despite access to really good Habanos at the Italian store on base....some people are drinking the cool-aid for sure! 1
