chifei Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Hi All, I am heading down under in a couple of days and was wondering if there are any good stores to hit when I'm in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney? Good reliable selection of cigars to purchase and smoke for the day while I'm there. Thanks!
Duxnutz Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 If it's not too late I'd say bring your own! Not too many though, or you'll pay tax on them! Melbourne has a few nice places left; place called Alexander's, a licensed LCDH and I think one lounge (siglo?). Sydney has a shop in the casino (don't recommend buying there - dubious as all the wrappers on the cigars look identical), a small shop in the Westin called 'Havana Express' (prices are high but the cigars legit) and another shop in the 'strand arcade' off Pitt Street in the city. I'm sure the great folks in Brisbane could organise you a care package!
chifei Posted October 24, 2015 Author Posted October 24, 2015 Thanks, doesn't sound like too many options!
sengjc Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Melbourne has a LCDH which is open 7-days a week (weekends are from 1-4pm only). Alexander's in Toorak are open from Mon to Sat. There is also a tobacconist whose shop is part of the Flinders Street Station building, one of the outer shops facing Flinders Street towards the main station entrance that has a good selection. Siglo Bar and RA Lounge are bars that sell cigars but at significantly marked up prices. 1
GavLew79 Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 SmokeLovers in Adelaide. It's a fair walk up past Rundle Mall, cross the main road, continue straight and it's on the left.
polarbear Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 +1 for Alexanders in Toorak I always pop in there when I'm in town. It nice to still be able to walk into a proper B&M in this country RA Bar and Siglo are good smoking options too if you fancy a drink and a smoke
DoubleshotTimbo Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 and another +1 for Alexanders. It's the only other shop I use.
jat Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 yep alexanders +1 and I've spent some money at HCDH in the Grand Hyatt as well. Echoing previous comments, bring your own, be much cheaper.
Fuzz Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 If you're bringing your own and you're coming from overseas, just be aware of the 5 cigar duty free limit. Any more than that, you will need to declare... or try and sneak past customs dudes... but if you're caught there are hefty fines.
jay8354 Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Yes, bring the 5 cigars. If you can plan ahead and don't mind paying some of the Aussies tax and duties, call Czar up to order some cigars and deliver them to your hotel under your name. i am not sure how long you are in OZ for, so assuming that this should be ok.
chifei Posted November 12, 2015 Author Posted November 12, 2015 Thank you all for the suggestions and recommendations. I didn't have as much time as I thought I did and just purchased singles at the retail stores in Melbourne (@ the Grand Hyatt) and Sydney (@ the Westin). Definitely not used to the prices vs. Hong Kong! Not sure if it's just an amateur's lack of experience in identifying good cigars but i felt the conditions of the singles at the stores were pretty bad. They were either dry and almost "crispy" or really damp......

chifei Posted November 12, 2015 Author Posted November 12, 2015 Well it's just my opinion which really doesn't mean much. If others have the same view then perhaps it's an issue but one bad review out of hundreds of good ones then the problem clearly lies with me and not the stores.
