I know this is about the time of year that Buffalo Trace makes their annual allotment of Pappy out to liquor stores. Has anyone been successful in the past few years in getting a bottle? I know the stores by me do lotteries for the allotment they get. Any tips to acquiring a bottle without paying a super high premium? I also would love to try a bottle of Black Maple Hill 16yo, but that seems equally as hard to find.

I was fortunate enough to have put my name on a list at the virginia ABC store in 2008 and have my number called last year. I got this bottle in november 2014 and have yet to open it. I had considered

I am on a few lottery lists this year. Unfortunately have never gotten a bottle. So frustrating as I actually want to try the stuff not just resell it. I figure if I can't get a bottle this year or next I might just shell out the money for a 12 yo or 15 yo.

Btw, wheat corn whatever...it's pretty much all the same across the country. I cannot see why Pappy can't increase production. Freakin ridiculous.

My buddy and his wife just got back from the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, he said that they told them at the distillery that they will be increasing production on PVW but it will be a while before it is noticeable on the market due to the ageing process and requirments. Look for it to be in greater demand and shorter supply for several more years.

Dude, Black Maple Hill 16 yr. has been out of production for years. It will cost you around $1200-1500 to get that bottle now.

Best way to get Pappy at retail is to establish a good relationship with the local liquor stores and basically spend a lot of money there and make sure to show your face regularly.

Some store owners are dumb and either jack the price sky high or they keep stuff like Pappy for themselves. Both are poor ways to retain good customers. There are plenty of liquor stores around, no reason to patronize stores that don't take care of their customers.

I had considered selling it but realized thatd be crazy! Also have you all heard about how the distillery has about half the product this year than typical, due to losing a lot more to the 'angels' than expected? Four Roses Barrel picks exponentially more readily available, better value and just as tasty!

Is Four Roses wheated? Can't make sense of the comparison The tasty part is subjective. If it's only about price and availability maybe Jim Beam will suffice.

I'll agree that the non S-W part make it considerably less valuable...imo. I'm sure it's still good bourbon, but not even close to worth the money they're asking.

Don't think it is.

No not wheated. Just made the comparison that it's damn good bourbon for not unreasonable prices (increasingly rare).

For wheated stuff, I'm still going through W.L. Weller 12 yr, Antique 107, Old Fitz and even Makers 46. A really great bourbon is a blend of 60% Old Weller Antique 107 and 40% Weller 12. Got that off a bourbon forum and it's still tastier than each on their own.

Does anybody know when this stuff hits California. Haven't been able to find an exact date for either Pappy or the BTAC line...

Thanks I've checked that out. Unfortunately all retailers I've talked to essentially don't know when they'll get bottles. Apparently bottles just randomly show up with other Buffalo Trace orders.

When I used to have the energy, I spent a lot of time developing a relationship with a small number of retailers in the area I lived at the time who seemed to have a wide selection. Chat with them, buy what they suggest (as long as you want it to some reasonable degree...) If you want Pappy, I suggest you do this. Otherwise, you are just one of the legions . But I suspect you knew that.

No store is going to sell hyped and limited bottles, at a decent price, to someone only looking to cherry pick their stock.

I've been fortunate to develop that relationship with my local and have scored two bottles of the 10 year in the last two years. That said, for my coin a bottle of Jefferson's Presidential Select is a better choice. Still hard to find, but the taste is smoother, more mellow and has a more interesting taste profile. Another way to find it is find out who the distributor is in your area and who buys from them. That's the store you want to spend your money at.

Happy hunting, t'is the season for special releases....

I went and talked to the guy at my local ABC (in VA all liquor is sold through the state at ABC stores, without exception). I asked about being put on the list that allowed me to score the bottle i got last year, and he said they arent doing it anymore and VA is likely going to stop sales of it. I am not sure if he had accurate info, but seems the state is getting sick of being bombarded with pappy seekers.

I called the Liquor Barn near me today because I had stopped in there earlier this year and inquired and they informed me that their Pappy lottery will begin around Thanksgiving. It seems that the end of November and early December when the allocation in the Midwest is actually realized.

Business Insider provided the lines for people waiting for Pappy 2 years ago and they look like Black Friday lines in front of Best Buys.... http://www.businessinsider.com/pappy-van-winkle-lines-2013-11

Here is some insight into the aftermarket price in NY after an allocation is released... http://kottke.org/13/11/its-pappy-time

I'm nopt a bourbon drinker, but there are a few bars around Melbourne that have Pappy in stock for sale by the glass.

Prices range from $400 a glass down to $90 a glass (both for the 23yo)

One question, is this stuff worth the prices and **** around?

I've spent a lot of time chasing some HTF and expensive rums out there and I'm yet to find one that was really worth the 3 times RRP I paid for it or the 12 months ass kissing and hand shaking it took to get one at RRP

Just saying

Not Pappy by any means but wheated none the less. Worthy of a try, to sample what wheat brings to the mix of grains.

For U.S Buyers:

If you haven't tried the 60:40 blend of Weller 12 and Weller Antique I highly urge you to do so. Prefer it to PVW Lot B I do!

In my opinion PVW 23 and 20, are a huge let down, (I have both bottles). The 15 and ORVW10 are where it is in both taste and value. I also would not waste my time on LotB (12 year), as it is really close or the same as Weller 12. As far as finding it in stores, it has taken me years of cultivating relationships with store managers and owners to be able to get a few bottles every year. That said if all you want is a bottle just pay the secondary price. It's not worth it but its cheaper then spending a year buying other things from retailer if you dont care about the other bottles. There are also better wheated and non wheated bourbons out there. If your going to coin up for PVW23 or 20 get a Willett FE wheated instead. A better value and bottled at cask stregnth. As far as Four Roses goes there are some steller store picks and odd recepies, but they are going away soon as well.
