ayepatz Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 I'm currently clearing out our attic in advance of our house move in a couple of weeks. We had the roof replaced about 3 months ago, and I'd not ventured up there since. Ho. Lee. ****. So far, I've gone through 2 facemasks, and have hauled off 4 carloads to the local recycling centre. Still got the final third to go. I feel like a miner in reverse. I go upstairs to get covered from head to toe in black dust. Nice.
Bennettjohnl Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 I feel your pain. Moved four years ago and my dreaded task was cleaning out the garage. By that time the garage hadn't seen a vehicle in two years and was full of storage and random junk. Felt like I had black lung and took a full week for my respiratory system to clear up.
HarveyBoulevard Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 We moved about every four years when I was growing up. I got used to keeping what was important and donating/selling/ditching everything else. I have been in the same house now for 7 years. I cannot imagine what a pain in the arse it is going to be to move. Planning to relocate a bit south in a year or two. I guess I should start packing now... 1
Fuzz Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 I still have boxes I haven't unpacked from 21 years ago. 2
Habana Mike Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Yes, moving is not fun. Glad I haven't had to in 20 years now. We are starting to slowly declutter in anticipation of a move within probably the next year or two - time to downsize.....
madbunny Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 no wonder people pay for get there stuff packed and moved ,I moved house 3 times in 3 years what a pain in the butt
brschoppe Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 About 8 years ago we went to sell our townhouse. It was right before the end of the housing market here in the USA so we decided to try to sell w/o an agent. We put the house on the market and sold it w/in a month. We searched for a new house and decided to build a new place. In the interim we would rent a place till the house was done in 6 months. So we moved our stuff into an apartment in order to sell our house. Two days before we were supposed to close, the buyers were denied their loan in the first of the loan restrictions to come out of the housing crisis. Luckily for us, we were able to find a way out of the apartment lease and moved back into our townhouse and then hired an agent to sell it. About 4 months later we were able to find a buyer at a lesser price and paying an agent a commission. We put most of stuff in storage this time and moved in w/ my in-laws for what was supposed to be a few months. Two weeks before closing on the house we were building, we got a call (on Valentines day) that they were pushing back our closing because their was an accident at our house. At lunch that day, I went out to check what the accident was and found they gutted the place with a fire because they left on a space heater to heat the plaster in the garage and a cardboard box fell over on it. After much negotiation, we were able to get out of that sale. Still living with my in-laws, we searched again. We found a short-sale and waited....and waited...and waited. Luckily after 6 months with my in-laws we got the place. Just in time too as the same week we found out we got the house...we found out my wife was pregnant (1. I guess what happen on our trip to Mexico, didn't stay in Mexico. 2. Guess who ended up having to do ALL the lifting during the move into our new place). I am not planning on moving for a very long time...if ever! 1
madbunny Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 same boat here my wife was 8 months pregnant when we started moving house and Emily decided she wanted out,so my brother inlaw and I packed and moved everything ,fun times
Fosgate Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 When my now ex and I moved about 6 years ago I planned on putting friends to work loading all the heavy furniture. It was tough going because as no one likes to do that part. So I'm starting at it and the help is late and who shows up. Jehovah Witnesses who asked if they could help. I put those two to work thinking nothing of it. Just as we are getting done, about a dozen friends show up as if on Que. Of course they had grabbed food at a bar and stayed to fill up a little too long. We decided then we had enough help to pack the whole house that night and knocked it out in no time flat. During that time the Jehovah Witnesses made a break for it and disappeared without a trace. No one really noticed until we fired up cigars when we were done and sat there and laughed about some of the discussions with them as we were moving. It was really the high note of a stressful move.
habanolover Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Just completed a move myself Major pain in the and still getting things settled. Highlight is siting out back in a beautiful yard for a smoke after a busy day...IF I can keep the skeeters from draining me dry
Fumadoro Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 I just moved a couple of months ago from an appartment to my wife and my first house. It was nice to become a landowner, but man, I never realized how much stuff we accumulated! If it's not in our kitchen, my saxes, or cigar related, it's going before the next move.
free85 Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 I, personally, find moving to be the most miserable thing connected with the human experience. I'm not much a sentimental person, so I can, quite literally, move all of my belongings in my Subaru if one were to exclude basic furniture (of which I have very little). If I were to move only what I cared about I could move everything in the passenger seat and one of the back seats. 1
luv2fly Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 Almost 4 years and the bonus room is still an unpacked mess! I will get to it eventually. Probably the next time we move.
ralphie48 Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 definaltey a major pain, We moved 4 years ago into the house that hopfully will suit us until the kids are grown and in college, i couldnt imagine moving again, like others have mentioned, i have boxes downstairs i never unpacked from 4 years ago and its probably some items we would make use of
free85 Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 I developed a little test for my stuff that solved the clutter for me: if I haven't used it or interacted with it in six months, out it goes. This, however, does not seem to work well for the woman in my life 1

free85 Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 We'll gladly take your cigars that you've been aging for more than 6 months! Fair play, Sir... Fair play. Ahhh but there's the rub... I interact with those monthly (checking the temp and RH counts)
