Hi,

Wondering on cigar choices in Cozumel. I have heard of lcdh and Havana bobs. Plan on stopping by both places. Any tips on special cigars to look out for? I prefer a mild smoke. Thanks, any tips or advice is much appreciated.

I hit the La Casa Del Habano back in 2012 coming off a cruise ship. It was a walk down from the cruise Terminal, but it you should be able trek it down there OK by foot (about 6 city blocks) if you are arriving that way. I believe it is near the Hard Rock Cafe off the main road that runs along the ocean. I don't know if they still have it, but the roof was painted with LCDH logo too. It is also located on the second floor of the building. The LCDH is both a cigar bar and Tapas/Steakhouse. The front part of the location is setup as a restaurant. the middle part is a bar lounge and the humidor is in the back. The humidor was about the size of a 90's house construction walk-in closet by stateside standards (so decent size, but not huge), but contained a variety of your favorite Cuban brands (the Cancun LCDH humidor was larger). I want to say that they did not have in stock a couple of the cigars I was looking for (which I found strange for a LCDH). After I made my purchase, I got a cheap 40oz of Sol and enjoyed some free wifi in the lounge area there.

When I was in Cabo last month, I was reminded of one thing about cigars in Mexico...there is about 150% tax on Cuban cigars in Mexico. Depending on what you want, you may get more bang for you buck by getting one of Rob's samplers to try different things out or putting together your own sampler of mild Cuban cigars. I have found that HDMs and Romeo y Juliet's should be good for a mild cigars.

Thanks brschoppe, you provided some great information. I will actually be at one of the all inclusives for a week which should give me plenty of time to explore both shops. Appreciate the reply, are there any regional mexican smokes i should be on the hunt for?

I was in Playa del Carmen in DEC 2015 and took the ferry over to Cozumel. The Cozumel LCDH is pretty nice but expensive, although probably not more expensive than any other LCDH in Mexico.

Better I think to bring your own smokes to Mexico. If you really want to enjoy the LCDH lounge experience, I would recommend picking up a single to smoke there.

They did have several boxes of the 2007 Mexican RE Edmundo Dantes El Conde 109. Regrettably, very large health warning stickers covered the bottom of the box and completely obscured the box code.

When you go to Havana Bob's, make sure you get as many of his custom rolled as you can. I would honestly stack them up against any CCs on the market. Good price as well.

Thanks rbelcastro for the input. Did he have any mild ones or were they fullbodied?

They would fall in "medium". My son likes mild and he loved them.

Regarding regional releases, Mexico's only had two.

Edmundo Dantes El Conde 109 with only 30K released between 07/08 and the Conde 54 with only 25K released in 2011

Limited and in high demand, consider yourself very lucky if you come across one.

I was in Cozumel in late May this year and stopped in at the LCDH for a quick cigar and mojito.

I was fairly pleased by the experience and didn't find it to be too expensive. I could see it getting expensive if you're looking for boxes and whatnot though. If I remember right, 2 mojitos, some great salsa and an Allones Extra 2011 was around $35. The service was great and everyone was super friendly. There was just one guy who spoke English but not great. His English is miles ahead of my Spanish so I wasn't complaining.

As already said, there wasn't a huge selection and quite a bit was out of stock. There was however, a fairly decent limited stock. He still had RA Allones Extra LE 2011, Edmondo Dantes El Conde 54 RE Mexico and Montecristo No 2 Grand Reservas available.

I believe that La Gloria Cubana had a Mexican regional for 2014. It hadn't been released when I was there and I did ask about it. He thought I was talking about the Inmensos though. Don't know if I'm mistaken on that or not.

ETA: scratch that. It was a Carabbean RE.
