I'm thinking about buying a used S.T. Dupont Laque de Chine lighter and was wondering if I could get some feedback on whether it's genuine or not. It's supposedly from the 1960s, but the condition almost seems too good to be true. Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Well, if it was never used it could still be in that condition.....any way to validate the serial number?

Can't help further but it looks really nice!

Thanks. I've been trying to research a way to verify the serial number but haven't had any luck. The seller actually claims it's never been used. Given it's age, that seems pretty hard to believe but the condition does look pretty immaculate. Might just have to pull the trigger!!

Line 1 Duponts are rarely faked anymore

I've seen (and own) a couple of Ligne 1's that look that good after a good service

If you can, ask the seller to remove the fill cap and take a photo of the inside of it, it should have paint on the inside that denotes the type of gas it takes

A big red flag with fakes is that they don't have the colour in the cap

Assuming the price is right, I'd feel comfortable buying it

Based on what I learned, I'd say legit.

DuPont hand stamp each letter and number on the bottom, you can see on the pic that the wording isn't perfectly uniform, hence done by hand like DuPont or the fakes have vastly improved. The fakes that I have all seen have the wording and numbers stamped in one go.

It's not my money obviously but it has the good bits that I look for when questioning real/fake. The owner and circumstances etc known to you have to be the deciding factor

Thanks gents! Ended up getting it. Price was ~$250 which I think is a fair price (if it's genuine of course).

Just had a look at my 60's one, if it was me buying I'd be confident it is legit based on what you've shown, congrats if you jump on it smile.png

Thanks! Now I just have to wait a few weeks for it to arrive lol. There's nothing like a well-made flame lighter if you ask me. Had a Ligne 8 but lost it unfortunately. I'm hoping this will fill the void.

No problem :) to save on money for the refill cartridges just buy one, not a whole pack. When you've used it get some sharp scissors or knife and cut the threaded end off the cartridge (make sure its empty) so you're left with about an inch including the special thread.

File the thread away smooth and now you can just pop it onto any butane can and refill the lighter :)

It looks legit to me.

Once identified as to which fuel fills it, you can check to see how well it takes the fuel. If after cooling the lighter and exhausting the existing fuel, it does not take a full cartridge, you will have an indication that the lighter is not legit. Dupont fuel is measured to specific lighters.

I have not seen frauds that have a quality lacquer. Most frauds that I have seen have been L2 lighters that are either gold or silver and have a pattern that is not offered in their catalog. I have one such fake "Dope'pont" as I call them. You can pretty clearly see that they are fake if you have any existing Dupont experience. Mine was a gift, like a box of glass top Cohibas!

I think that is a pretty nice lighter that you found there and I would have popped for that in a heartbeat.

In buying one used, it is nice to know that you did not pay top dollar for it and put the first nick in it. A couple of mine are so damn aesthetically pretty, that I have a hard time using them beyond simply appreciating them as items of art. I have used all my lighters, but I typically just use my 007 these days. Having had one stolen, I am pretty choosy where I use one today.

Nice find mate. Thanks for sharing. -P

Thanks. I have no doubt that it's real. It came with the 1960s/1970s pamphlet/documentation and the quality is very high. Also, bottom markings are not machine engraved. The condition is so immaculate I wouldn't doubt that it was only used a few times. My torch lighter is going to remain my primary lighter and will save this for special occasions.

I'm like you find the duponts so aesthetically pleasing but when it comes to actual use, i cant go past my Prometheus triple jet.

That's a beauty! Where'd you find it?

Thanks. Out of all places, I found it on Etsy lol. Some guy in Argentina was selling it.

Greetings, I believe it is a 70's model not 60's. Very nice and great condition. I sold my 1964 earlier this year because I don't use it and someone else can get use of it. I prefer my Dunhill silver S Type to all lighters I have ever had. Thank You Blessings.!!!

Just realized this, but you can tell from the second photo I posted the warranty card says 1-12-1976 so it was made in 1976.
