Was thinking of buying a box of Cohiba Maduro, but didn't know which?

They are not a favorite of many, so can't tell which one I should go for?

Was thinking of buying a box of Cohiba Maduro,

Serious question: Why?

My guess is that you haven't smoked a few of them so you're asking us. Either that or you're asking for a public question to re-inforce your decision? Personally, if you're not sure on which to buy, I would hold off buying a full box of any cigar let alone a Cohiba. That's a pretty large investment if you ask me.

Genios, followed by secretos. The Magicos are the most consistent of the bunch however. Consistently awful.

Wherever you buy from, make sure the wrappers are thin and supple. They are notorious for having thick, brittle, fireproof wrappers.

They're crap - why would you waste your money on them? NC maduros beat these all day long for 1/3 of the price.

Magicos I like them and the size....I have some secretos with seven years on them and they are great...what I have seen is a massive variation in colour and wrapper quality in all three formats as in all Cuban formats I suppose ..The one thing I will give all three is that construction has always been very good ...you can always buy 10 counts in all three as well

I have had 2 secretos and 2 genios, they were okay, not that memorable. Rob picked me a box of Magicos that was absolutely Magic. As the name suggests. Right up there!

I've had a few and loved the pepery spice that came witht them. I haven't smoked enough NC Maduro to coment on those, but these I have really liked but never bought blind and had any of the issues that Cohiba haters seem to find in every stick they try.

The Genios was geat with the Magicos just piping it for 1st place for mine.

I've gone through a 10-box of Genios and while I've been less than overwhelmed I still think I'll get another box now when the first one is nearing an end. It's lasted me two years though, so not very high demand. If our host would run them in a 24:24 I might get another box, but only then.

I've had a single Secretos too and didn't care for it, so for me the vote is Genios.

I really like the Genios, especially for a fall/winter cigar. Wish it would be about a 1/2 inch longer but still a very enjoyable cigar with a unique profile for me.

For me the secretos are the best as the wrapper does so much better on a thin ring gauge. The genius and magicos taste more NC. If you let a box of secretos age for 3-5 years the flavor is incredible. Creamy dark chocolate, blackberries, toast, and leather. My only complaint is obviously the price (though 24;24 deal is a no brainer) and the length. Wish it was a coronas especiales or lanceros!

Thank you for all the feedback.

I think I'll put my money else where.

I guess if it weren't for the price, I would have gone for a box of 10.

I have to disagree with this. I've had 2 boxes of these so far. Smoked through 1, from 2011, that I just finished this year. I've started on the second, a PSP from 2014, and they are already coming into their own.

I've had a few poor sticks but generally they have been pretty consistent. Generally a sweet profile with hints of chocolate and milk coffee... They tend to bitter towards the end a tad. I'm excited to see how the 2014 PSP will develop over time.

Note that these are very pricy though and possibly can achieve the same flavor profile from a NC maduro at half the price.. So in that respect I agree with the general sentiment. I probably would not have purchased the second box of I didn't enjoy the previous one from 2011.

My advice is to pick up a few singles and fire them up. You are your only judge. To spring for a box right off the bat would be a hasty decision.

Construction has always been very good?!?! You sure you're thinking of the cohiba 5 line?

The Maduro 5 line divides people more than any other lol3.gif

People generally either love them or hate them.

You need to buy great examples. Again what Shlomo said in relation to wrapper is essential. makes all the difference when you purchase then with thin, supple, shiny wrappers. Anything else to my mind is a waste of money.

If you enjoy a chocolate/coffee profile, the right maduro 5 box delivers it in spades. Genios and Secretos at their very best are excellent. Magicos far more subtle.

Back in '07/'08 I went through a number of boxes of the Secretos. While a few were dowels those that smoked, smoked great - rich full flavors.

Became disenamored with them a couple of years later as quality seemed to have suffered. Haven't picked any up since.

Have smoked maybe 2 boxes of Secretos from the original release and a box of Genios, only a handful Magicos...like everyone else has said, a wide range of smoking experience. The best of the bunch are rich, powerful, earthy and delicious. The worst, well, think Rocky Patel. No disparagement intended to those who love Patel's cigars...I've just never smoked a one that I didn't absolutely hate.

If I were in your position, I'd buy a sampler of the sizes and then put my cash into a more reliable selection. If you want rich, heavy, earthy, pick up a box of RyJ Cazadores. I sound like a broken record about these sometimes but I've been through over a dozen boxes of these in the last 7 or 8 years and have never been dissatisfied.

I enjoy both Genios and Secretos however I found that the secretos for me had a consistently loose draw.

If you want maduro, fuente is the way to go IMO. Don't even bother with cohibas.

I answered Secretos... a nice, sweet, graham cracker flavor when at their best.

But to me, they bear little resemblance to non-maduro Cohibas. They are a different beast.

I've been systematically experimenting with some non-Cuban cigars and have found some maduros that equal or excel the flavor of the Cohiba Maduro IMO. I particularly like the Oliva Serie G Special G Maduro, CAO Brazilia, CAO Double Maduro. The latter two come in small formats in tins. These are all very inexpensive and flavorful maduro cigars. They aren't the same as the CohMad, more spice to them, but I like them better.

In non maduro non Cuban cigars, I've found very few that are the peer of my favorite brands of regular production Habanos.

Smoking a genios right now and absolutely loving it. It's the only maduro I've had so can't really tell you which is better other than to say the Genios is very nice.

Edit: I have had some Padron maduros and I think those are also really great but I would say the Genios is equal to or slightly better.

Had the original release and were quite hyped but they were nothing since, wrapper changed, bummer.

I second daeji5's assessment, if I am looking for a maduro I grab Fuente. I am not enamored with the Anejo line, but if you can find a box of the limited release Hemingway maduros, you cannot go wrong.
