In Swedish, a "gurka" is this:

gurka-300x300.jpg

So every time I hear or read about the Ghurka cigars, my mind pictures cucumbers.

$2000 for a cigar is taking the piss a bit... All luxury and no style, but that's Ghurka for you.

You can't really blame Gurkha if there are people willing to buy them. I sure as hell wouldn't, but I wouldn't mind finding something legal that I could sell at a 10,000% margin :)

I'll fly to Cuba, and stock up on REAL cigars before paying that much for a Gurkha.......no.gif

I swear the only reason they make the msrp so high is so they can make it on those "Most Expensive/Stuff for rich people" lists that magazines make sometimes. They're just looking for publicity. You'll find these selling at a 99.97% off discount from most vendors next week.

The headline is hilarious: "GURKHA STILL ON TOP OF SUPER PREMIUM LUXURY CIGAR CATEGORY WITH $2,000 LIMITED EDITION MAHARAJA

So the setting of the highest MSRP ever is some sort of achievement. Awesome.

Simply appalling. I think I just threw up a little in my mouth....

Surprised Gurkha doesn't realize how dumb this makes them look.

really? making a fortune from people idiotic enough to pay this sort of dosh for a cigar makes them look dumb?

they must just piss themselves silly at threads like this.

they don't see any of us as their market and could care less about us. yet we get so worked up about them. sure, they might be after publicity but that is far from all - profit!!

never smoked one, never seen one and no intention of paying that sort of hooter for any smoke (if i was seriously wealthy, i might for some great old cubans, perhaps pre-fidel, for the experience but otherwise, no chance). but if someone wants to, their money. not for us to question how they spend it.

we've seen all this with wines, where sometimes there is a genuine reason for it - eg, the wines of DRC. extraordinary wines from the best earth on the planet, tiny quantity (not for marketing purposes but simply because they can't make any more with their resources). and demand built up in line with their reputation over many decades. it is why the best can get $10k a bottle. and there is a long queue for them.

we have seen big prices for unproven wines from young vines - fancy bottles, good marketing, high alcohol etc etc. lot of people wasted a lot of money. people learn. we seem to be largely through that now but there will always be examples. in ten years, it might not be gurhka but it will be someone else.

all manner of reasons why people could be buying these -

yes, idiocy ranks high.

as corporate gifts for clients who will be impressed.

to see what the fuss is about.

because they have sufficient wealth that cost is irrelevant.

because it brings prestige in their circles (yes, we might not want to be in that circle but so what).

perhaps they like them.

it is highly likely that this will all blow out in a relatively short time but in the meantime, the fools are not the people making the dosh.

for me, better that they spend their cigar money on them than on cigars i might want to buy, pushing up prices and reducing stocks.

It's not like these will ever make it to your local tobacco shop. I'm guessing these will probably end up in high-end Vegas bars and that's probably about it. Vegas is the only place where I can see this cigars selling (obviously to someone who knows little about cigars and who is looking to show off his money). Obviously, if you were a true cigar aficionado, you'd probably go for a fiver or Dunhill Cabinetta or something similar for $2k.

Boy, I didn't realize how big of a following Gurkha had until joining my local cigar club---and everybody has access to CCs but still prefer the Gurkha. I personally don't care for them, but they definitely have a following and I'd be willing to bet if some of them had the money to drop on a box like this they would without blinking an eye.

Has anyone here tried one of their HMRs, infused with the Louis XIII? Or any of the other "super-premium" Gurkhas? I'm not talking about the steeply discounted trash that ends up on auction and closeout sites, but their truly high-end stuff? I'm just curious what those are really like, knowing I'll never smoke one.

I'd be interested to know how many boxes of these they actually sell, to real people, not corporate entities looking to impress business associates.

Ken, what is it that convinces you that they are actually making money selling these? Is there actual evidence that they are 'making a fortune' on these cigars, as you claim? I wonder if anyone has actually bought a box of these, or if it's just a gimmick to produce buzz for the brand and lend prestige by association to the cheaper cigars of theirs that people do actually buy.
