Do you, or don't you? Just made my first cc purchase and am wondering if the high temps in the shipping process, should I freeze?

The link posted above will certainly help you out.

Generally, unless you live in a climate where you can't control the room temperature, I wouldn't worry about it on Cuban cigars from 2008 on (being conservative here). No harm in doing so however.

Caveat.

You freeze anything you have purchased (or have been gifted by someone who has purchased) in Cuba. This includes all Customs.

If I'm going to freeze anything, it's customs. I also keep my humidors and coolers in basement where the temperature doesn't fluctuate as much during storage.

Good to know. I had dug around here a bit and found older posts on the topic with tons of information. Great to hear from El Pres that I can toss boxes purchased through him directly into the humi after a visual inspection. This will save me untold amounts of grief in the near future. If my wife saw a constant stream of boxes rotating through her fridge/freezer She'd probably audit my credit cards.

Have been freezing everything, no matter the source, for many years. Because of this process, or maybe just dumb luck, I have never had a beetle outbreak.

I also freeze everything, doesn't harm or change the cigar in anyway and it s a nice piece of mind.

Again, I've never frozen anything except some customs and boxes purchased in Havana. Last time I've heard of a beetle outbreak (a real outbreak, not a single hole and/or the dead body of an adult) was 15 years ago.

I've decided to take the same approach. For the piece of mind it's certainly worth it.

Found the 2 little buggers that did this. One was dead the other wasn't. Inspected all other cigars and found no damage. Removed the infected, gonna smoke it still.

Should I freeze everything in the humi? Or did I catch it early enough?

The eggs cannot be seen by the human eye so who knows if they laid elsewhere.

I'm not a fan of beetles but also not an over-reacter so I'd just quarantine the cigar and keep a close eye on the humi for awhile. If your Temps and humidity have been good and stable then the buggers may have come from the store not your humi. If your humidor has been out of whack then maybe a freeze for everything is in order.

Do you know if the lay eggs specifically in the cigar, or can it happen in the open like imbedded in the humi?

They lay eggs on a food source.

The reason they were in your cigar is that the eggs were on the tobacco leaf and then the leaf was rolled into your cigar. Then somehow the conditions were right for those eggs to hatch (too much humidity and Temps over 75*F~ish)

Eggs from adults would be laid on the surface of other food sources. So if they did lay eggs it'd be on the cellophane or surfaces of other cigars.

Again, I've had one cigar get beetles and just watched things and nothing ever happened again. It may take a long time (days/weeks) for a beetle to eat through a cigar, so it may have already been in place when you bought the cigar.

My Humidors are stored in an area that stays a constant 65 degrees F, so I have never frozen, nor have I ever found beetles or their damage. Blessed I guess!

HERFed with a good friend down south of me and after talking about this topic decided to freeze everything that comes in my door. My collection was quite small at the time so it wasn't bad and now I've got the routine down, though have a bit easier as I have a chest freezer in the garage so there isn't much to it. Probably don't need to do it, but that little bit of peace of mind is nice.
