saw this from cbs. hard to argue with the team they name the greatest ever. yes, i know that was not the point of the article but it makes for an interesting argument - one that will never see agreement. i was very lucky in that these were the guys playing when i lived in DC. although the downside is that it got me expecting great things from the skins every year.

if only i had known what was to come. still - they were brilliant.

72 Dolphins and 2007 patriots was what I was glad to see on the list. Very good list, extremely accurate and agreeable.

the 87 skins only needed one quarter against the broncos in a superbowl to rack up that sort of number, or thereabouts!

very hard to go past the 85 bears. what a team. they made watching footy great fun.

i love those 91 skins and i think what makes them stand out is that it was a team in the truest sense of the word - no superstars (well, darrell green) but just a really top group right across the entire squad. great team of receivers. the hogs, even if it was near the end of them. and the bloke i think you can argue is the greatest ever coach - joe gibbs. before cowgirl and steeler and pats fans jump down my throat, i would say that this guy won three superbowls with three different QBs (no one else has ever done that and i mean how hard is it to coach brady etc etc?) and that all three were average to okay at their very best. to achieve that is something seriously special.

2007 Patriots and 2009 New Orleans Saints for me :)

By the way... GO PATS! ok.gif

2007 Pats. Can't help but be a total homer. If the Pats win this season Brady and Belichick will have to be ranked with the best franchises of all time in any sport.

Ok let me first state I am a diehard Giants fan. But the greatest team IMO is the Pitsburg Steelers from 1978 , 1979.

Look at the HALL of FAMERS on the team. Second place the 86 Giants.

I will love the Patriots until my last day on earth but it is hard to argue with that...

pittsburgh must have a fair claim but re the 86 giants (and who would not be a fan of lawrence taylor?), and i say this as a skins fan so we had the benefit of it the following year, any team playing the broncos or the bills in the superbowl back then really only had to front up.

not sure we'll ever know if those teams were any good or not.

1972 Miami Dolphins and 1985 Chicago Bears.

An interesting footnote...both these teams were retrospectively invited to the White House to honour their winning seasons. No-one knows why Richard Nixon did not do so, it's theorised that he was a Washington Redskins fan, and the Dolphins eliminated them in 1972. However, it wasn't always customary, as it is today, for the Super Bowl-winning team to visit the White House for a ceremony. And even if it had been a tradition, it wasn't much of a time for celebrating in the White House, as President Richard Nixon was becoming entangled in the Watergate scandal. Otherwise, who knows? Perhaps the Dolphins would have been the first team ever invited -- since Nixon was a major sports fan and also a bit of a Dolphins fan (He maintained a residence in South Florida at that time).

In 1986, the Bears visit was organised by Ronald Reagan but cancelled due to the NASA Challenger Spacecraft disaster. The Bears were invited by President Obama in 2011. The Dolphins met with Obama two years later in 2013.

don shula has been quoted as saying nixon was a dolphins fan.

he was a californian so hard to see him being a skins fan initially. and not sure why a dolphins fan.

for superbowl vi (the loss to the cowgirls), shula said nixon would ring him with suggestions. he was also known to ring george allan at the skins with suggestions. apparently the suggestions rarely panned out but they were good friends. it would be a brave president who spoke ill of the skins while in DC. some things are truly sacred.

but if you read hunter thompson, there is a time when he ended up in the back of a limo with nixon (if i recall - it was a while ago i read this) who was his avowed enemy. but they talked football and hunter T said he was extremely knowlegable and obviously a big fan of the game.

i do know reagan invited the 87 skins to the white house and they even had him throw a pass out into the crowd for darrell green (i think) to catch. pretty sure he had the giants there the previous year.

I agree. No way to tell. Like I said a diehard Giants fan. I am a big LT fan, and they were dominant but to be fair not one of the best. You need to sustain at least a 3 year "dynasty" to be one of the best.

But here is an interesting thought. The Buffalo Bills.. they never won but they made 4 Super Bowls in a row. Never been done before and prob never again.

and they did go close against your lot if i recall, but it all went downhill after that. over by half time v against the skins, even worse v 49ers and then christmas for the cowgirls. they were certainly the best in the AFC but curious how the AFC was behind the NFC for such a long time. as far as i can see, just one of those things.

Joe Gibbs also called two timeouts in 07 to blow the season. Because he was trying to ice the kicker. A scheme created by the best coach ever Mike Shanahan. 2 of the best Bronco teams (with former 49er Super Bowl winning linebacker bill romanowski) john now the man in charge elway. He created zone block running schemes that any back could learn and run a 1000 yards, than trade those bums to the lions for more corners. That's brilliant. Also he took Joe's job! And sadly killed RG3.

shanahan did seem to be the running back whisperer. can only assume it was him who spotted alfred. what a great pick - rare for the skins.

in fairness to joe, he was getting on a bit in his second crack and by that stage in his career, he suffered from the same thing a heap of recent skins coaches have copped - dan the man. but even under dan, joe has the best record, i think. had a fabulous record in his first stint - hence hall of fame, i guess.

shanahan didn't take over from joe - we had the short but not terribly glorious career of jim zorn in between.

and fairly or not - something it is too early to tell i think - the giant mess with rg3 will leave a stain on his career. better for his rep if he had not taken the dan dosh.

Jim Z was not the skins original choice. I remember the rumour of them contacting Shanahan. And he made Morris a great back no doubt.

and that blood stain can't be seen when wearing a skins shirt.

The real question is will the Broncos dominate the league and win the Super Bowl? Yes.

Will josh McDaniels cheat and get caught and not get thrown out of the league? Yes

Will Tim Tebow have Jesus blocking for him? Yes. Except when they play the bills
