i'm interested why you would say 'another rip off' (not trying to have a go at you, genuinely interested)??

have you tried it?

i have not, as best as i can recall, tried this specific rum.

drank gallons of the standard, and a fair bit of the OP when i was younger but rarely these days. not a great fan of the style. but 1,000s are. that said, some of their special releases and aged rums have been very good - though there is always a touch of the bundy DNA in each release. as there should be.

as best as i can see, a standard bottle of this normally retails for $50 to $60. not too bad for a spirit aged for 6 years or so. this is then selling for just over $60/bottle in the large format. so not really excessive to me.

what many people do not realise is that there is an incredible market and support base for bundy's special and one-off releases. people, not just qlders, drive 1,000s of miles to be at the distillery for their release to grab a single bottle. many then immediately go on ebay etc, for massive money. that 18 year old from a few years ago was going for many thousands a bottle. it is not alone. and others are held by collectors who would not let them go for any money.

given all that, you may not like the rum, but i suspect that a great many people will think that is one of the bargains of the year.

i enjoy the 700 ml just thought i would put it out there for the 4.5 litre bottle

i reckon you'll see them on the bar in the games room of bundy lovers. the intention will be never to open them but just have them there, almost like a piece of art. then one of their mates will get pissed and crack it and they'll end up drinking it.

for bundy haters, i understand re the standard stuff - real love it or hate it stuff. but do not dismiss bundy out of hand. the premium stuff is worth trying.

After being introduced to central and South American rums, I really do find it hard to appreciate, (swallow) Bundy. I'm not up to speed with production techniques, but I'd really go for if it wasn't so harsh. Perhaps a function of the maturation, and not the distilling?

Johnnie Walker have a 4.5L cradle version of their Red and Black. Don't see anything wrong with Bundy going down this route. And with a nice looking cradle like that (JW's is a cheap metal wire frame), it should sell well.

madbunny, I also concur with westy's and Rob's taste in rum. There's nothing wrong if you favour Bundaberg as a rum, but as for me, once you've savoured a rum like Zacapa it's hard to look back.

+1 on the Zacapa! What's the flavor profile on the Bundaberg? I don't recall having had it, at least not neat.

Now that's funny...I don't care who you are!

it has the aroma of a wet dog

Posted

Ah yes, wet dog...while that might be palatable if you add enough cola or ginger beer I prefer my Rum neat. Good thing they don't have U.S. distribution or I might, in a moment of weakness/drunken stupor, be tempted!

Anyone who doesn't like bundadaberg rums should try the one released yesterday. $53 aud. Love finding a bargain like this.

Only a handful of rums under $100 aud could beat it and none are easy to get.

Seems like most of the popular rums these days smack of added sweetener.

Reminds me of when I stumbled across teeling small batch Irish whiskey.

The Polar Bear is an odd mascot for an sunny Queensland product..

the polar bear was developed in 1961 by a bloke called sam mcmahon. he also brought in their famous square bottle. sam was the brother of billy and uncle of julian the actor (for non aussies, billy mcmahon was prime minister late 60s early 70s and probably most famous for the dress his wife wore to the white house when they met nixon. sonia was seriously hot in her day while billy was a bald big-eared short politician. the dress might still be the one of, if not the most famous ever worn to the white house).

sam came up the idea of the polar bear as bundy was to be seen a a great spirit which could ward off the fiercest cold.

Thanks Ken for the background on that. Did not know that it ever got cold in Queensland.

yesterday at 9am, inside my house (and yes, had the heater on), it was 7C. fricking freezing.

one morning a few winters ago, at 8am-ish, i got a mug of water and ice but put it down and forgot it. got home around 5pm that evening. the mug was still full of ice. so i figure it never got above perhaps 1 or 2 degrees at any stage that day. has happened several times.

had some mates around a while back and we were on the balcony for a cigar. very cold. same spot as we do the vids. about 9pm. one of the guys had a thermometer gun and took the temp over the edge of the balcony. minus 4.

granted my house is colder than most but...

cold enough?
