stigmata Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 Everything is possible in Cuba. Rest them. Smoke them.. They're probably fantastic!
joncat Posted May 31, 2015 Author Posted May 31, 2015 Smallclub The usual story. Buddy's friend has a "girlfriend" in Cuba. He goes there every other month. She has a "cousin" who works in one of the factories. They smuggle cigars out. Everyone one, including the plant manager, is in on it and they share the profits. I've heard this story 1,000 times. That's why I buy from our host or LCDH. I never have to second guess.

Smallclub Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 I was quite excited as my daughter and 5 friends had recently returned from Cuba with 10 boxes of cigars for me. My cigars were, however, topped by a great looking box of Trini Robusto T. The 10 boxes come from the same source?

Your saying that the general manager of the factory that produces Trinadad or any other brand is compliant in the sale of counterfeits right out of his factory?

Your saying that the general manager of the factory that produces Trinadad or any other brand is compliant in the sale of counterfeits right out of his factory? Obviously, I can't speak for JC, but we've all heard the stories which accompany counterfeits - my uncle's brother's cousin's mother works in the factory and gets me these cigars. Also, there is no question that legit cigars have left factories via the back door ( I've no idea who would be complicit ) And then of course, there was the arrest for corruption of the commercial director of HSA So it is possible.
Smallclub Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 Am I reading this correctly? Your saying that the general manager of the factory that produces Trinadad or any other brand is compliant in the sale of counterfeits right out of his factory? This happened before. I remember the flood of "backdoor" Partagas Salomones in the early 2000's. Not to mention more recent events…
Quint Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 Wow I'm surprised, guess I shouldn't be but I am. I can see legit cigars finding there way out the back door with people looking the other way, but counterfeit cigars from the factories surprises me.
Colt45 Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 but counterfeit cigars from the factories surprises me. If a "legit" cigar leaves a factory via the backdoor and is sold outside of regular channels, is it legit or counterfeit...... 1
Quint Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 Counterfeit cigar in my opinion is not how it's sold, its a cigar that is rolled buy others means than the official means in which it should be produced. Coca-cola that makes its way out of the factory by the back door or "falls of the truck" is still legit coke sold illegitimately. That doesn't make the product counterfeit. Coke made in someone basement is counterfeit. If a cigar is made in the factory according to the recipe and sold by non legit means it's not counterfeit, if it's made in the factory from floor sweepings it is. At least that's the way I think about it. 1

At least that's the way I think about it. To a point. Back door legitimate Habanos had been going on for years. But there has also been more sophisticated shenanigans involving LE's, vintage, premiums etc. It is still Cuban tobacco but not what you think you are paying for.
Habana Mike Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 Good point Rob. Quite a few stories of rebanded and/or reboxed authentic cigars out there. As they say, caveat emptor. Knowing and trusting your sources is utmost.
earthson Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Reminds me of somebody on another forum who has supposedly been scoring seconds from out the back door of El Laguito...
joncat Posted June 1, 2015 Author Posted June 1, 2015 No I did not buy the cigars. My 10 boxes came from LCDH in Varadero. My daughter and 5 friends went to cuba and I was able to get 10 boxes. My buddy got a box of Trinis and he gave me 3 cigars. I must say they are not bad fake or not. I am too old to deal in fakes. I only buy from our host, a local B & M in Toronto or LCDH.
