joncat Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 I recently met up with some BOTL in Vaughan and we enjoyed some libations and cigars. I was quite excited as my daughter and 5 friends had recently returned from Cuba with 10 boxes of cigars for me. My cigars were, however, topped by a great looking box of Trini Robusto T. They looked great and smoked well also. Photos are attached. I know that these were discontinued in 2012 and must be counterfeit. I thought I would just share these with those of you who are more knowledgeable and experienced than myself. I tried to get a box of these fakes (price $260) but there were none left. What are your toughts?
SCgarman Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 One can, never be sure what is rolled in the cigars unless you dissect one. Usually the 3 letter box code is always on top of the month and year. True, these have been discontinued for some time now and the legit boxes of 24 usually sold for about 350USD.
Habana Mike Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 You'd think the counterfeiters would do just a little more research as much effort as they put in to producing this stuff. Lucky if you find an authentic box of 24 under $500 these days....
LordAnubis Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Far out! Those looks like some pretty good counterfeits to me !!!! Thanks for the pics
vavrekjjj Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 here in Czech republic there are few boxes left .. (also i saw COHIBA 1966 LE2011 , Montecristo 520 , Trinidad Robusto Extra ... )
Smallclub Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 I wouldn't risk smoking known counterfeits. The OP has already smoked one and obviously he's still alive and well... What do you think is the risk in smoking fakes rolled in Cuba exactly? We're not talking about banana leaves from Costa Rica here (judging by appearances).
CaptainQuintero Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Possibility of the T having a very limited run like the Fonseca #1 last year? Or an old mastercase found somewhere? I haven't heard of new T's anywhere before but stranger things have happened
SCgarman Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 No way would they be legit for 260 a box. Discontinued cigars never sell for cheaper than when the were being produced. You probably could not find a legit box even for the 350USD that they sold for.

Orion21 Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 The box is wrong and I have never seen the stamp in that configuration. A good looking fake, but fake all the same. My Trinidad boxes are a much darker color. It looks like they used cheap wood to save money on the boxes or a different lacquer. Either way, I wouldn't smoke them at any price.

Buying fake goods supports criminals. My 2 cents.
santela Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Well, if they are rolled on the island and are smoking great, then authenticity isn't that big of a concern to me.
ElJefe Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Dissect one mate, just for safety sake. The goal being to make sure there isn't anything in them besides tobacco which could impact your health negatively. If its all tobacco and no other crap then smoke em if you like em. In terms of authenticity, I agree with general consensus here that they are definitely fake.
xtcat9k Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Did you run the serial number to see what it comes back with? 1
joncat Posted May 30, 2015 Author Posted May 30, 2015 The cigars are a very good smoke. I did not run the serial number as the box is not mine. I did score a couple of cigars from my friend though. I also think it would be useless to check out a box of 2015 cigars that were discontinued in 2012. I just fail to understand why the counterfeiters don't do a little more research. If your going to fake a Trini Robusto T why not date the box 2011 as opposed to 2015?
Stanislaw Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 Aside from the odd code and stamp on the back, everything about those sticks and box look legit... At least compared to my memory of the Trinidads I had last year that were dated 2012.... Did they officially stop making them?
Quint Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 Damn when I saw the title you got me excited. Would love to see the robusto come back.
joncat Posted May 30, 2015 Author Posted May 30, 2015 I have a few authentic Trini Robustos in my humidor. I cannot tell the difference by putting the sticks side by side. The only reason I concluded they are fakes is the date. I was hoping Habanos SA is bringing them back and these are the first of a new release. I could find nothing on the web though so I reluctantly came to the conclusion they're fakes. Maybe someone on this site has some better insight about this.
SparklePony Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 They look awfully real to me. The box is really well done.
JohnS Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 The old saying goes, "if it looks too good to be true, then it probably isn't!" It's a simple and wise saying. I want to believe this is legitimate, but my gut feeling says 'no'.
Smallclub Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 I can't believe no one yet asked: where have they been purchased?

If your going to fake a Trini Robusto T why not date the box 2011 as opposed to 2015? Because counterfeiters always miss the fine details which differentiate the fake from the genuine. I am a Rolex watch enthusiast and belong to a watch forum and the fake watches just never seem to "get it right". Something is always off and the watch geeks can ALWAYS spot a fake just by some good detailed pics. The same applies to Cuban cigars.
