Popular Post dowjr1 Posted May 23, 2015 Popular Post Posted May 23, 2015 Walking my GSD Maximus yesterday over by the soccer fields, I cut through some woods to an area where they are building a new housing development. They knocked down trees and forest and have now put in paved roads. But the areas on either side of the pavement is exposed soil. So I look down yesterday and there lays an arrowhead. For me it was an awesome find. I have always loved rocks, minerals, and archeology to boot. As a kid in WV I must have picked up a couple thousand triangle shaped rocks....hoping, praying, wishing I had at last found a REAL arrowhead. I tell my wife and she yawns. I tell her it could be hundreds of years old! I send this picture to a friend. His archeology professor friend tells me it is no arrowhead, rather it is a Savannah River style spear point. He says the tip and side had been damaged and re sharpened...then likely used as a scraping tool. He says mid to late Archaic period which would date this baby to...ready for it?....2000 BC or older!!! Wow! I have since confirmed its shape and style with other sources. A small find in the dirt turns out to be, for me, a gigantic find and at last the fufillment of a childhood wish. 8
HarveyBoulevard Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 Very cool indeed. When I had to pick a science in college I could choose between physics, chemistry, biology, and geology. I picked geology. Always been fascinated by the science of geology and finds like these. Good on ya. Jeff
theholmesmob Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 I love finding 'treasure' as well....nice job..... If your anything like me you'll be going back looking for more!
DWC Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 Great find Dan! Maybe you can report it to some local archeological authority and they will put a halt to the building while they dig to look for more. That'll keep it from being built up too soon and give you a nice place to walk with you dog. I too have picked up a 1000 pointed rocks as a kid hoping it was an arrow head. (I bet a lot of us have.) I'm envious! 1
Jeremy Festa Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 Imagine who held that in their hand way back when! Sent from my iPhone 1
soutso Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 Looking at the picture, before reading the content I thought this was one of those potato chips that look like a celebrity. I was trying to figure out which one! Great find. 1

hellorockview12 Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 Finding something that old would be such a thrill.
Rye Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 Really cool! I always return from a walk or hike with rocks in my pockets. So far mostly petrified wood and a couple fossils and a piece of dino-crap, but never a spearhead or arrowhead yet.
Stogieninja Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 On behalf of all of us who once dreamed of that as children, I congratulate you!
airtrade Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 Nice find! As a kid when my family would visit relatives in rural Kentucky I would search long and hard to find The elusive arrowhead. Of course all I came up with were bits and chips of flint. The five or six cases of arrowheads, spearheads and knife blades my uncle found over the years kept me searching. I learned later that he was ploughing and tending tobacco fields when he found them not searching the creek and grass!
MIKA27 Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 Thats an amazing find. We might look at that as a simple piece but in this day of fast food and supermarkets, we often forget such tools were life and death. Someone spend some time to create that arrow head in order to provide for themselves, their tribe and family. I think that is brilliant.
smokum Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 Quality find. A guy I know winters in New Port Richey Florida and is an avid arrowhead hunter there. He showed me a collection made from coral. Very cool and quite valuable.
