Differences in Tobacco Leaves

Recommended Posts

I am not sure if i can go into much depth with this question so I hope this thread starts to snowball off itself..

-What are the different leaves of the tobacco plant?

-What role does each type of leave play during the aging process ( I understand certain parts get better with age, and others don't change much with age)

-Is there a certain correlation between leaf length and the length of the intended cigar?

-How are different leaves rolled to produce a finished product?

After reading through a lot of forums I understand that certain cigars benefit from age more than others..

Different leaves bring out different tastes and I am just curious as to how the tobacco works.

Cigars are not just burning leaves and it is really interesting to learn how all these different factors come together to create a work of art.

-What are the different leaves of the tobacco plant?

volado, seco, ligero

If rolled together, I guess they all play a part

-Is there a certain correlation between leaf length and the length of the intended cigar?

I imagine that there would not be a six inch leaf in a five inch cigar.

-How are different leaves rolled to produce a finished product?

They are typically bunched together in a cylindrical shape.

All comedy aside, there are, as members have mentioned, a number of great resources re the topic. and I am not one smile.png

But generally speaking, the plants are primed (picked) in pairs from the botttom up - volado first, then after a time seco, then after a time ligero. So I guess it is a matter of exposure to the sun.

But it's also more than that - it's how the tobacco is processed post harvest, how long each priming is aged, then the intended blend / intended characteristics for each cigar.

I know, big help.......

The World of the Habanos book (aka the Poor Mans Min Ron Nee) explains this in detail if you ever get a copy. John

Agreed. A bargain book with interesting info on cuban tabacco. Basic history, a review of current brands and growing, picking and processing of tabacco. Vitolas/brand charts with a CD thats able to be updated from what I understand.
