JerseyG Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Preparing my latest treasure for storage I noticed this on one of them. Please advise...
tmac77 Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 vacuum pack them into a zip lock freezer bag and pop them into the freezer for a min of 3 days. migrate them to the fridge for another couple of days to thaw and then into the humidor.

With the addendum that if you can vacuum seal them, 7 days wouldn't hurt anything. Turn your freezer temp LOW for this!
raymond5737 Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 I've got to check my babies for any of this tobacco beetle activity. And then I've got to make room for the boxes in the freezer. There go my Popsicles...
Redsoxnat Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Are light patches a sign of larvae? I have seen a few cigars that have a significant almost cream color light patch in separator spots. Maybe the size of a small pebble. Thoughts?
Smallclub Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Are light patches a sign of larvae? No. You know that a larvae was in your cigar when you see one or several holes (round or elongated) and/or some black dust falls from the foot of the cigar. I wrote "was" because generally the larvae and adults are dead when the cigars (exported from Cuba) are in your hands.
El Presidente Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 I wrote "was" because generally the larvae and adults are dead when the cigars (exported from Cuba) are in your hands. Spot on Frank I came across this yesterday. In years gone by the entire box would be shredded and other cases within the mastercase affected. It would have been a serious problem. In this case it was a beetle boring out in the period between the factory and the HSA freezing rooms. I see it at least once every warehouse visit so while not overly common, it does occur. 1
bugg4672 Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Honestly, you cant be mad at the Beetles, they like CC also 1
Stanislaw Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Honestly, you cant be mad at the Beetles, they like CC also hilarious and a positive way to look at it in more ways than one.... could you imagine if/when they decide to use pesticides or GMO's to create a leaf that repels bugs? I'm okay with seeing odd holes every now and again because it tells me that we are still enjoying a natural product and not something that's got additives, chemicals or the like to "enhance" quality...

The day they start treating the leafs with chemicals I say just start machine rolling everything and precut or punch the head for us. The day the beetles leave I leave.
El Presidente Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Honestly, you cant be mad at the Beetles, they like CC also I have found that given the choice they have fine taste in tobacco. Attack the shitty box in picture 2....Nooooooooooo of course not.
hellorockview12 Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 I have another question regarding beetle holes. As Rob described above, that beetle hole was from the transition between the factory and the freezing process. If you guys ever see one of these in your boxes, do you discard it, or do you smoke it? I'm not talking about cigars that got beetle holes while in your care, but ones that came in new boxes of Habanos with a box dates later than 2005 (correct me if wrong, but I believe I read that's when Habanos started freezing cigars).

Caveat on my comments. Freeze everything you are buying within Cuba....everything. As for that D4 with the hole. I would freeze the rest of the box as a precaution. I would then clip the cigar under the hole and have a D6 3
hellorockview12 Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Thanks Prez, I'm going to have to start this as I haven't in the past. With my collection constantly growing, what a loss it would be. I can't even think about it. I'm sure we can all agree those little critters are what nightmares are made of!
moryc Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 I had a quite the scare when I found a dead beetle and one cigar with a hole in a box of Siglo VI. My heart stopped for a minute and from that point forward I freeze everything as soon as it comes in. It sets me back a few day before I can indulge but it gives me a peace of mind.

You can use the hole like a carburetor. Even if there is larva or a bug in it, its extra flavor, hell all the food we eat has a certain amount of insect in it anyway, so shot smoke the bugger. 2
Redsoxnat Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 So does this mean that we should freeze the CCs we get from you as well? I have great faith in FOH so these words carry great weight. Interested to know because if yes my whole humidor is going in the freezer. Caveat on my comments. Freeze everything you are buying within Cuba....everything. As for that D4 with the hole. JerseyG Posted May 21, 2015 Author Posted May 21, 2015 Other's with more experience will no doubt respond but I can say without reservation "No". One empty hole out of hundreds of sticks is not going to send me into a panic. I think I'll go have a smoke
Redsoxnat Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Sorry, I will clarify my comment. It was more of a general comment about freezing. I have never frozen cigars and was just wondering if it is a practice to get into even with cigars from FOH. Other's with more experience will no doubt respond but I can say without reservation "No".
